At just sixteen years old, Anita Delgado caught the attention of Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala in Madrid. What started as a chance encounter quickly blossomed into a grand romance involving heartfelt letters, magnificent jewels, and a royal proposal. Before stepping into her new life, she spent two full years in Paris preparing for the immense responsibilities of her royal role.
In 1908, she married him in traditional Sikh rites, officially becoming Maharani Prem Kaur of Kapurthala.
The reality behind the royal fairytale
Palace life in India, however, was far from a simple fairytale. Upon her arrival, she discovered that she was his fifth wife. The immense cultural shifts and the emotional distance within the royal household made her new reality incredibly complex.
Years later, their marriage came to a definitive end following a dramatic confrontation in London. In 1925, a highly public and intense argument broke out at the Hotel Savoy in London when Maharaja Jagatjit Singh accused Anita Delgado of infidelity and threatened her with divorce.
The confrontation quickly escalated into a massive scene, with Anita reportedly throwing herself on the floor in tears. The dispute became so chaotic that Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a mutual friend who happened to be staying at the same hotel, had to personally step in to mediate on Anita's behalf.
This explosive fight marked the definitive end of their 18-year marriage. Through Jinnah's intervention and subsequent negotiations, the couple agreed to separate. Anita secured a generous financial settlement that allowed her to leave India, return to Europe, and maintain her luxurious lifestyle.
Anita Delgado lived her life having never fully belonged to either world, yet having been completely extraordinary in both.
