To the attention of the Presidents, the delegates and the members of the European Nobility Associations affiliated to the CILANE

In 2008, the ANF will commemorate its 75th anniversary, so the CILANE decided to entrust France with the organisation of the 18th congress. We have therefore the honor and pleasure to invite you in Versailles from the 26th to the 28th of September.

The congress, which will take place on saturday 27th, will deal with the following subject: the Nobility in the European civilisation. It will consider the responsibilities of the nobility in the integration of the European nations. The nobility played an outstanding part in the construction of the European civilisation and in what resulted in the “European entente” based on the conscience of belonging to the same family of nations and on shared values.

As the nations of Europe are trying to reconstruct their history, we thought appropriate to recall the place occupied by the nobility and to consider what its contribution may be now. More than conflicts, the real mainsprings of history are friendship, concord and mutual aid. Should we give a meaning to the future, we must not overlook our common identity and betray our past. We have inherited the historical, religious, philosophical traditions which resulted in the European civilisation. Thus our social group most vigilantly sees to it that the heritage, the codes, the stories, the values that shaped this Europe are maintained. “Sustainable development” is an old habit with us. Each of us brings his own traditions and culture, but it is in order to share in common consort, like musicians – proud of their art and instrument – who serve the orchestra and play the same music.

We hope that this congress will be, as it used to be in the previous years, a priviledged moment to strengthen the links between our associations and favour exchange of views and mutual aid. It will also be an opportunity for members of our associations to discover or see again prestigious historic sites.

I invite the members of your different organisations to come in great numbers to this “family reunion”; we hope that younger people will be actively present. We shall make a point of accommodating them in families.

Adel praat over toekomst

Ze zeggen niet gebakje, maar taartje, en ijskast in plaats van koelkast. Mensen van blauw bloed, hoor je vaak, herkennen elkaar feilloos aan hun taalgebruik en omgangsvormen.

Maar heeft de adel in onze samenleving, waar afkomst hoegenaamd geen rol meer speelt, nog iets meer te betekenen dan een gezellig netwerk van gelijkgestemden dat elkaar helpt bij het vinden van een goede baan en partner?

Dat is de vraag die driehonderd edelen vandaag bezighield in Den Haag, waar voor de zeventiende keer het Europese Adelcongres wordt gehouden.

Aanleiding voor de bijeenkomst was een oproep van aartshertog Otto von Habsburg. Hij riep de Europese adel drie jaar geleden op de verworvenheden van de adel aan de maatschappij ten goede te laten komen.

Nijpend
Voor Nederland is de vraag des te nijpender omdat hier sinds 1994 geen mensen meer worden verheven tot de adelstand.

De enige manier waarop je in ons land als gewoon burger nog een adellijke titel kan verwerven, is trouwen met iemand van het Koninklijk Huis (zie prinses Máxima). Ook kan je je laten inlijven door buitenlandse adel, of je laten adopteren door iemand van adel. Vooral dat laatste komt de laatste tijd vaker voor.

In Nederland zijn circa 10.000 mensen van adel, verspreid over ongeveer driehonderdvijftig families. De meesten zijn jonkvrouw of jonkheer. Slechts een derde heeft een echte titel: prins, baron, graaf of ridder.

Adellijke afkomst was in Nederland lange tijd niet iets waar je mee te koop liep. Dat is inmiddels wel veranderd. Tegenwoordig is het weer populair om je titel te voeren, al was het maar om je te onderscheiden van al die andere mensen met veel geld.

Oergezellig
Maar er is meer. Baron van Hövell tot Westerflier, van de Nederlandse Adelsvereniging, denkt dat de adel wel degelijk een rol van betekenis kan spelen. "Impulsen aan positieve maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen", noemt hij dat in een interview met het Radio 1 Journaal.

Zo kunnen ze bestuurswerk doen voor liefdadigheidsorganisaties, of de kerk. Ook kunnen ze actief worden in buurtwerk, of in de gezondheidszorg.

Hij erkent dat dat in principe geldt voor iedere Nederlander. Maar zegt hij: "Wij hebben toch een gemeenschappelijke achtergrond, en kunnen bogen op enorme ervaring. Die willen we graag ten positieve aanwenden".

De baron geeft toe dat het driejaarlijkse congres zeker ook een sociale functie heeft. "Het is oergezellig. Je komt toch mensen tegen met een gelijke achtergrond. Dat is zonder meer prettig. Je praat toch over dezelfde manier over dingen".
