The British royal family is evolving, and the youngest generation is leading the charge in defining what a modern royal life looks like. James, Earl of Wessex, the youngest child of Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, has made a significant choice about his future role. Having turned 18 on 17 December 2025, James has officially decided not to adopt the "His Royal Highness" (HRH) style or the title of Prince, despite having the legal right to do so.
A choice left open
When James was born at Frimley Park Hospital, he automatically became a prince of the United Kingdom under a 1917 decree by King George V, which granted princely status to all male-line grandchildren of a sovereign. However, his parents, Prince Edward and Sophie, made a forward-thinking decision at the time of their 1999 wedding. They agreed with Buckingham Palace that their future children would be styled as the children of an earl, rather than as a prince or princess.
This approach was intended to give James and his older sister, Lady Louise, a more normal upbringing, free from the intense public scrutiny that comes with being a senior working royal. Yet, the choice was never set in stone. His mother, Sophie, previously confirmed that both of her children retained the right to their HRH titles and could make their own decision once they reached the age of 18.
Forging his own path
Now officially an adult, James has chosen to stick with the title Earl of Wessex, a courtesy title he assumed in 2023 when his father was named Duke of Edinburgh. By choosing not to use the HRH style, he is signaling a desire for a more private life, aligning with his mother's previous remarks that her children are very likely to have to work for a living.
Currently finishing his studies at Radley College, James is steering his own course. While he still attends major family events—such as the coronation of his uncle, King Charles III, and the vigils for his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II—he is stepping away from formal royal duties. This decision allows him to chart a professional and personal life outside the confines of the working monarchy, proving that sometimes the ultimate luxury is the freedom to choose your own destiny.
