Katholisch und evangelisch, Adel ohne europäische Königshäuser, Papstwünsche und Technomusik: Die Hochzeit des Beinahe-Kaiserpaares in Potsdam ist von allem ein bisschen. Den Akt der Vermählung nahmen sie selbst in die Hand.

Sie wären das deutsche Kaiserpaar, doch fast 100 Jahre nach Ende der Monarchie war die Hochzeit von Prinz Georg Friedrich mit Sophie Prinzessin von Isenburg bloß eine weitere Adelshochzeit – wenn auch eine besondere. Hier trat schließlich der Ururenkel des letzten Kaisers Wilhelm II. vor den Traualtar, Chef des Hauses Hohenzollern und damit theoretisch Wilhelms Nachfolger, um eine Prinzessin aus dem hessischen Haus Isenburg zur Frau zu nehmen.

Der 35-Jährige und seine Braut wählten für ihre kirchliche Hochzeit eine historische Kulisse, die Friedenskirche im Schlosspark von Sanssouci. Rund 600 Gäste versammelten sich um 12 Uhr in dem nüchtern gehaltenen Sakralbau. Unter ihnen waren zahlreiche Vertreter des deutschen Hochadels, außerdem Prinz Hassan, der Onkel des jordanischen Königs Abdullah II., und der israelische Botschafter Yoram Ben-Zeev. Auch Brandenburgs Ministerpräsident Matthias Platzeck (SPD) war unter den Gästen.

Königliches Kleid statt tatsächlicher Monarchen
Zu den prominenten Gästen gehörten Modedesigner Wolfgang Joop, der Sänger Max Raabe und Fußballtrainer Otto Rehhagel. Aus europäischen Adelskreisen waren unter anderem die russische Großfürstin Maria Romanowa und die rumänische Kronprinzessin Margarita eingeladen. Die europäischen Königshäuser waren nicht vertreten. Denn Prinz Georg Friedrich ist lediglich ein potenzieller Kaiser – die Anwesenheit tatsächlicher Monarchen wäre nicht standesgemäß gewesen.

Königlich war hingegen das Kleid der Braut – eine aufwändige Schöpfung von Modeschöpfer Joop. Das Kleid aus 60 Metern Seidentaft, Seidentüll und Organza mit reichen Volants sollte „an einen Wasserfall erinnern“, sagte Joop dem RBB-Fernsehen. Dazu trug Sophie einen antiken Schleier im zum Knoten gebundenen Haar und ein Diadem aus ihrem elterlichen Haus Isenburg. Die Herren erschienen im Cutaway, also in dunklem Gehrock mit grauer Weste und dunkelgrauer Hose. Georg Friedrich trug dazu auf dem Weg zur Kirche einen schwarzen Zylinder.

Aktives Bekenntnis statt Willst-du-Frage
Die Trauungszeremonie wurde ökumenisch von dem evangelischen Pfarrer Michael Wohlrab von der Kaiserin Auguste Victoria-Stiftung auf dem Ölberg in Jerusalem und dem katholischen Abt Gregor Graf Ulrich Henckel-Donnersmarck, einem Onkel des Filmregisseurs Florian Henckel-Donnersmarck, abgehalten, da der Bräutigam evangelisch und die Braut katholisch ist.

Neben christlichen Klängen wurde auch ein jüdisches Loblied vorgetragen. Den Akt der Vermählung nahm das Brautpaar gewissermaßen selbst in die Hand. Nach einleitenden Worten der Geistlichen sprachen Georg Friedrich und Sophie jeder ein Eheversprechen, das die berühmte Willst-du-Frage durch ein aktives Bekenntnis zueinander ersetzte. Nach der Trauungszeremonie verlas Abt Henckel-Donnersmarck ein Grußwort von Papst Benedikt XVI., in dem dieser dem Brautpaar und seinen Familien „von Herzen“ seine „besten Segenswünsche“ sandte.

Kein Schloss, aber Glamour
Für den Auszug aus der Kirche griff das Paar wieder auf die Tradition zurück und ließ den Hochzeitsmarsch von Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy erklingen. Mehrere hundert Schaulustige vor der Friedenskirche klatschten begeistert, als das frisch vermählte Paar auf die Straße trat und sich küsste.

Anschließend stiegen sie in eine Landauer-Kutsche, gezogen von sechs Wallachen, und fuhren zum Empfang mit Champagner und Kanapees in der Ovidgalerie der Neuen Kammern im Park Sanssouci. Am Abend hatte das Hochzeitspaar 350 Gäste zu einem Diner in die Orangerie des Parks eingeladen, zu deren Abschluss auch Technomusik aufgelegt werden sollte.

Otto von Habsburg, ältester Sohn des letzten Kaisers von Österreich und Königs von Ungarn, ist tot. Er starb im Alter von 98 Jahren in seinem Haus in Pöcking am Starnberger See. "Er ist friedlich eingeschlafen", sagte eine Mitarbeiterin der Nachrichtenagentur dpa. Otto von Habsburg war langjähriger Europaabgeordneter für die CSU und Ehrenpräsident der Internationalen Paneuropa-Union.

Kampf gegen die Nationalsozialisten
Habsburg wurde am 20. November 1912 in Reichenau in Niederösterreich geboren. Nach der Niederlage im Ersten Weltkrieg wurde die Donaumonarchie aufgelöst und die Republik ausgerufen. Die Familie lebte zunächst im Exil in der Schweiz und auf Madeira und dann in verschiedenen Ländern Europas. Habsburg zog schließlich nach Frankreich. Er galt als entschiedener Gegner Adolf Hitlers und der Nationalsozialisten. Nach dem sogenannten Anschluss Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich 1938 veröffentlichte er aus seinem Pariser Exil einen Aufruf an das Ausland zum Einschreiten. Vor den anrückenden deutschen Truppen floh Habsburg in die USA.

Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg richtete er seinen dauerhaften Wohnsitz am Starnberger See ein und war weiterhin publizistisch tätig. Das Verhältnis der Familie zu Österreich entspannte sich erst in den 1960-er Jahren. Besonders die österreichischen Sozialdemokraten lehnten eine Regelung ab, die die frühere Dynastie in irgendeiner Form begünstigt hätte. 1961 unterzeichnete Otto Habsburg-Lothringen, wie die Familie dort amtlich heißt, eine Erklärung, die den Verzicht auf Titel und Thronanspruch bedeutete.

Seit 1979 in der CSU
Seit 1978 hatte Franz Josef Otto Robert Maria Anton Karl Max Heinrich Sixtus Xaver Felix Renatus Ludwig Gaetan Pius Ignatius von Habsburg, wie er mit vollem Namen heißt, auch die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft. Seit 1982 war er Mitglied der CSU und engagierte sich seit 1979 aktiv als politischer Mandatsträger.

Bei den Direktwahlen zum Europäischen Parlament wurde er 1979 auf sicherem Listenplatz der CSU in dieses Gremium gewählt und bei den Europawahlen 1984, 1989 und 1994 bestätigt. Seine Mitgliedschaft nutzte er, um die Osterweiterung der EU voranzutreiben. Vor allem für den Beitritt Ungarns setzte er sich bis zu seinem Ausscheiden aus dem Parlament 1999 massiv ein.

Berlin/Nieder-Weisel, 27. Juni 2011Am 25.06.2011 fand der diesjährige Ritterschlag des Johanniterordens in der Komturkirche zu Nieder-Weisel statt. Der Herrenmeister des Johanniterordens hat für die Posen-Westpreußische Genossenschaft Prof. Jörg-Detlef Rossbach und für die Schleswig Holsteinische Genossenschaften Hubertus v. Mettingh Graf v. Luckner zu Regierenden Kommendatoren berufen. Weiter hat er Dr. Friedrich Thelen zum neuen Ehrenkommendator ernannt und Malteserritter Peter Graf von Pfeil und Klein-Ellguth sowie Wolfram Rohleder, Mitglied des JUH-Bundesvorstands, das Ehrenritterkreuz verliehen. 62 Ordensmitglieder wurden zu Rechtsrittern geschlagen.
Die rund 200 Gäste kamen am Wochenende u. a. aus Finnland, Polen, Ungarn, Schweiz, Österreich, Frankreich und den USA. Die Festpredigt hielt Pastor Prof. Dr. Peter Lampe, Universität Heidelberg.

FAQ Belgische adel

1. De Raad van Adel valt onder de bevoegdheid van de Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken. Is de Raad dan ook bevoegd voor de buitenlandse adel ?

Neen. De Raad is enkel bevoegd voor de Belgische adel. Dit geldt ook voor de Dienst Adel en de Consultatieve Commissie.

2. Zijn er voorrechten verbonden aan een adellijke titel in België ?

Neen (cf. artikel 113 van de Grondwet).

3. Welke adellijke titels bestaan er in België ?

Van laag naar hoog zijn dit: jonkheer/jonkvrouw, ridder (geen vrouwelijk equivalent), baron/barones, burggraaf/burggravin, graaf/gravin, markies/markiezin, hertog/hertogin, prins/prinses.

4. Moet een adellijke titel vermeld worden op officiële documenten (identiteitskaarten, paspoorten e.d.)?

Ja, want in België maakt de adellijke titel deel uit van de identiteit van de persoon. Om alle misverstanden te vermijden: de titel maakt geen deel uit van de naam, die onderworpen is aan eigen regels.

5. Is "jonkheer"/"jonkvrouw"/"écuyer" wel een adellijke titel ?

Ja (cf. arrest van het Hof van Cassatie, 1927).

6. Moeten predicaten als "Hoog(wel)geboren Heer/Vrouw" of "Messire" eveneens vermeld worden op officiële documenten ?

Neen, want het gaat hier slechts om aanspreekvormen vergelijkbaar met "Mijnheer/Mevrouw/Mejuffrouw", "Monsieur/Madame/Mademoiselle".

7. Waar kan ik te weten komen of iemand tot de Belgische adel behoort en, in voorkomend geval, welke titel hij officieel mag voeren ?

8. Ik zou graag iemand voor een adellijke gunst willen voordragen. Is dit mogelijk ? Tot wie moet ik me richten ? Wat zijn de vereisten ?

Verzoekschriften tot verlening van een adellijke gunst (voor zichzelf of ten gunste van iemand anders) worden steeds gericht aan de Koning (p/a Koninklijk Paleis, 1000 Brussel) of aan de Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken. Verzoekschriften rechtstreeks ingediend bij de Dienst Adel, de Consultatieve Commissie of de Raad van Adel, zijn niet ontvankelijk.

Er zijn geen bijzondere vormvereisten, maar het is wenselijk een curriculum vitae en/of alle nuttige informatie over de betrokkene bij te voegen. De verzoekschriften worden immers op dossier beoordeeld door de Commissie. Bij de beoordeling wordt vooral rekening gehouden met de bijzondere verdiensten van de betrokkene voor het land.

Er wordt op gewezen dat het steeds om een gunst gaat en dat adellijke gunsten in principe enkel worden verleend aan fysieke personen die de Belgische nationaliteit bezitten.

9. Ik meen af te stammen van een adellijke voorouder. Zou ik voor een erkenning van adeldom in aanmerking kunnen komen ? Wat zijn de voorwaarden ?

Wanneer de verzoeker meent in wettige, rechtstreekse, mannelijke lijn af te stammen van een voorvader die in onze gewesten tot de adel behoorde tot het einde van het Ancien Régime (d.w.z. tot aan de afschaffing van de adel in de Franse Tijd) of die in zijn land van oorsprong officieel tot de adel behoorde, kan hij een verzoekschrift tot erkenning van adeldom indienen. Het verzoekschrift dient eveneens gericht te worden aan de Koning of aan de Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken. Hetzelfde geldt voor verzoekschriften in rehabilitatie van adeldom, d.w.z. wanneer de adeldom reeds vóór 1795 door derogatie verloren was gegaan.

Om deze procedures te kunnen voeren, is het vereist dat de verzoeker zelf (of de afstammeling(en) waarvoor hij de erkenning vraagt) Belg is van geboorte. De procedures zelf worden gevoerd op dossier voor de Raad van Adel.

De volledige bewijslast berust bij de verzoeker. De bewijsvoering gebeurt door overlegging van bewijsstukken in de vorm van (voor eensluidend verklaarde kopieën van) documenten (diploma’s; geboorte- of doopakten en huwelijksakten), waaruit enerzijds onomstotelijk de adeldom van de voorouder blijkt en anderzijds de rechtstreekse, legitieme band in mannelijke lijn tussen verzoeker en zijn adellijke voorvader wordt aangetoond. Gezien de vereiste bewijsvoering, is het aangewezen voorafgaandelijk contact op te nemen met de griffier van de Raad van Adel (dhr. Paul De Win: 02/501.46.90).

Er wordt op gewezen dat het ook hier steeds om een gunst gaat en dat de Koning niet verplicht kan worden om tot erkenning of rehabilitatie over te gaan.

10. Zijn er kosten verbonden aan deze procedures ?

Het onderzoek zelf door de Dienst, de Commissie of de Raad is kosteloos. Wanneer de adellijke gunst wordt verleend, wat in eerste instantie bij koninklijk besluit gebeurt, dienen er ‘adelbrieven gelicht te worden’. De gunst wordt immers maar van kracht wanneer de Koning het diploma tekent en het document vervolgens officieel geregistreerd wordt. Het koninklijk besluit dat aan de basis ligt, geeft enkel de toelating om tot lichten van het diploma over te gaan. Aan deze procedure zijn er kosten verbonden: het diploma wordt door een zelfstandige kunstenaar vervaardigd en kost ca. 3000 €; voor de registratie ervan dienen bovendien nog registratie- en kanselarijrechten te worden betaald (minimaal neerkomend op 751,20 €), in geval van een erkenning of rehabilitatie beperkt tot de kanselarijrechten (6,20 €).

11. Mag ik als Belg een buitenlandse adellijke titel voeren ?

Neen. Het is zelfs strafbaar op grond van art. 230 van het Strafwetboek.
Buitenlandse titels die aan Belgen worden toegekend, zijn in België dus waardeloos en ze kunnen bovendien nooit het voorwerp uitmaken van een procedure in erkenning.

12. Mag een adellijke buitenlander zijn buitenlandse titel in België voeren ? En wat gebeurt er als bij de Belgische nationaliteit aanneemt ?

Een buitenlander die in zijn land officieel tot de adel behoort, mag ongestoord in België zijn adellijke titel voeren. Voorwaarde is wel dat de titel vermeld staat op de officiële persoonsbewijzen die door de bevoegde autoriteiten van zijn vaderland zijn verstrekt. Wordt hij Belg door naturalisatie, dan verliest hij zijn adellijk statuut van zijn land van oorsprong en heeft hij niet meer het recht om zijn buitenlandse titel te voeren. De generatie die als Belg geboren is, kan wel een erkenning van adeldom aanvragen (zie boven sub 9).

13. Kan ik de bibliotheek en/of het archief van de Raad van Adel raadplegen ?

De handschriftenverzameling van het Heraldisch Fonds (of Fonds Beydaels) en de gespecialiseerde bibliotheek zijn (voorlopig) niet toegankelijk voor het publiek.

De handschriften van het Heraldisch Fonds zijn wel op microfilm te consulteren op het archief van Buitenlandse Zaken, Karmelietenstraat 15, 1000 Brussel, na afspraak met Mw. Françoise Peemans, archiviste (P&C 1) (02/501.81.01; françoise.peemans@diplobel.fed.be).

Voor de raadpleging van de gepubliceerde werken, zoals vermeld in de oriënterende bibliografie, wordt de belangstellende verwezen naar de openbare bibliotheken, naar de Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België en naar de gespecialiseerde bibliotheken van o.m. de Vereniging van de Adel van het Koninkrijk België/Association de la Noblesse du Royaume de Belgique (Franklin Rooseveltlaan 25, 1050 Brussel; tel. 02/642.25.20), van de Office Généalogique et Héraldique de Belgique (C. Het archief van de Raad van Adel en van de Consultatieve Commissie is in principe niet raadpleegbaar. Sommige archiefbescheiden die ouder zijn dan 50 jaar kunnen eventueel geraadpleegd worden mits een bijzondere toelating vanwege de Minister op grond van een gemotiveerd verzoek m.b.t. een zeer concreet geval.

De Vereniging Buitenlandse Adel in Nederland heeft een nieuwe website. Daarmee wordt beoogd om haar European Nobility Network (ENN) nog verder uit te breiden. Het ENN kent honderden leden in binnen- en buitenland. Ook de VBAN-site Nobility News - met bijna 180.000 hits - is op de website zichtbaar. Het is de bedoeling om de site in de toekomst een speciale ledenpagina te geven.

Op 2 augustus 1896 meldde De Gelderlander: 'Er is thans moeilijk in ons land een stad of dorp te noemen, waar men niet een of meer katholieken vindt, wier borst met een Pauselijke eereteken is versierd.' Sinds het herstel van de bisschoppelijke hiërarchie in 1853 waren Pauselijke onderscheidingen en kerkelijke ridderorden in Nederland zeer gewild. Two thousand guests are to attend the ceremony
The guest list and seating plan for Prince William's wedding to Kate Middleton have been revealed.

Close family members are to sit nearest to the royal couple as they take their vows on Friday at Westminster Abbey.

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry will sit in the front row.

Celebrity guests include Sir Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham and Rowan Atkinson.

Miss Middleton's mother Carole will sit directly opposite the Queen, next to her husband Michael and her son James.

The remaining places on the Middletons' front row are yet to be confirmed.

Westminster Abbey is essentially two churches, said the BBC's Royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell.

Those sitting near the high altar will have the best view of the marriage while guests in the nave would see very little, he said.

Democracy may not be an obvious subject on the minds of David Cameron and Nick Clegg, as they sit in their top hat and tails in the ancient abbey.
But it might arise when they glance around at their fellow guests.
Close by will be the senior representatives of two countries which have recently clamped down on pro-democracy protests - the Crown Prince of Bahrain and the King of Swaziland.
They are two of the 46 foreign royals who've been invited. There'll be six kings and five queens - all have titles, not all still possess thrones.

There'll also be reminders of the price of the pursuit of democracy. The sister of one soldier killed in Iraq; the widow of another who died in Afghanistan; and a Lance Corporal with burns to much of his body will be in the congregation.

Among those attending will be Olympic swimming star Ian Thorpe, who recently announced that he was coming out of retirement to compete in London in 2012.

Prince William met the sportsman when he visited Australia last year and he is now a supporter of the swimmer's charity, Thorpe's Fountain for Youth.

Other sports personalities attending will be former England rugby coach Sir Clive Woodward, Sir Trevor Brooking, a Football Association colleague of the Prince who is the body's president, and Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas.

Service personnel also feature heavily in the guest list.

Squadron Leader Paul Bolton, from RAF Valley in Anglesey, North Wales, where the prince is based as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot has been invited.

Prince William has invited members of the families of two close friends and colleagues from Sandhurst who died on active service.

Holly Dyer, the sister of 2nd Lieutenant Joanna Dyer, who was killed by a bomb in Iraq in 2007, and Susie Roberts, the widow of William's Sandhurst platoon commander Major Alexis Roberts, killed four years ago in Afghanistan, will both be in the congregation.

Forty-six foreign royals will be in attendance, including the Prince of Bahrain, whose country was recently criticised by Foreign Secretary William Hague for its human rights record.

Die bevorstehende Hochzeit von Kate und William soll gemäß den erwarteten Zuschauerzahlen neue Maßstäbe setzen: 2,5 Milliarden Zuschauer erwartet man weltweit. Was spielt es dabei für eine Rolle, ob die Briten dieser Hochzeit skeptisch gegenüberstehen? - Die Welt wird teilhaben an der perfekten Inszenierung, die Träume vieler Mädchen werden sich auf die noch verbleibenden blaublütigen Junggesellen richten und auch die größten Anti-Royalisten werden sich der Präsenz des Ereignisses in den Medien nicht entziehen können.
Dabei ist es ja keinesfalls so, dass alle, die diese Hochzeit bejubeln, die Monarchie als natürliche Regierungeform rehabilitiert sehen wollen. Was fasziniert die Menschen rund um den Globus an dem englischen Königshaus, das ja neben all dem Glamour auch immer wieder mit handfesten Skandalen aufwartet.

Noblesse oblige
Adel verpflichtet: Das weiß jeder. Aber wozu eigentlich? Zur Religion? Zu karitativem Engagement? Zur Pflege des kulturellen Erbes und somit zu Tradition? Zur Familiengeschichte? Auf jeden Fall handelt es sich um eine andere Lebensform, als sie die meisten Menschen leben. Werte wie Kontinuität und Nachhaltigkeit werden in Adelskreisen hochgehalten.
Hat das auch die Begeisterung für Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg begründet? War er als Politiker wirklich anders als seine bürgerlichen Kollegen? Wird man seine kindlichen Prägungen auch dann nicht los, wenn man sich dem Adel, zum Beispiel durch unstandesgemäße Hochzeit entzieht? Und umgekehrt, bleiben einem die adligen Umgangsformen verschlossen, wenn man sie nicht von Kindesbeinen an in Schlössern, Internaten und Reitställen erlernt hat?

An anonymous top official from the Palace told NN that "Prince William and Kate Middleton will spend their honeymoon in Australia" after their wedding on Friday in London.

The couple will follow in Prince of Wales' footsteps.

William and Kate will spend their wedding night at Buckingham Palace. On Saturday, the couple will head to Balmoral before setting off for an Australian honeymoon.

There have been already a number of secret calls on behalf of the couple arranging specific requirements during their stay.

The Palace declined to make any official comment yet.

Das OLG Frankfurt a.M. hat entschieden, dass das Persönlichkeitsrecht eines Namensträgers, der sich durch Adoption einen Adelstitel verschafft hat, nicht verletzt wird, wenn er als “nichtadelig” bezeichnet wird. Das Landgericht hatte noch mit beachtlicher Argumentation ausgeführt, der Verfügungskläger sei durch die Äußerung in seinem Persönlichkeitsrecht verletzt, da der unbefangene Leser die Äußerung als Herabsetzung des Verfügungsklägers verstehe, die vom Verfügungsbeklagten bezweckt sei. Gerade aus dem Zusammenhang mit der Überschrift und der Berichterstattung über verlorene Gerichtsverfahren des Verfügungsklägers ergebe sich, dass die Äußerung den Verfügungskläger in der Öffentlichkeit lächerlich machen solle.
Mit der Formulierung „nichtadeliger Namensträger” wolle der Verfügungsbeklagte zum Ausdruck bringen, dass der Verfügungskläger zwar für beide von ihm geführten Namen den Adelstitel „von” bzw. „Prinz” führe, in Wirklichkeit aber nichtadeliger Herkunft sei. Im genealogischen Sinn sei ein „nichtadeliger Namensträger” derjenige, der durch Adoption, nichteheliche Geburt, Einbenennung, Legitimation, Namensänderung oder Eheschließung einen adeligen Namen erworben habe. Dies ergebe sich aus zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen, die der Verfügungsbeklagte in erster Instanz vorgelegt habe. Die Personen, die durch Adoption ein Adelsprädikat erworben hätten, würden als „Pseudoadelige” oder „Nichtadelige Namensträger” bezeichnet. In die klassischen Adelsverzeichnisse würden nur Personen aufgenommen, die dem sogenannten historischen Adel angehörten, also von Geburt an den Adelstitel führten. Dies seien Personen, die durch eheliche Geburt den Namen im Mannesstamme erhielten. Genealogisch sei es deshalb zutreffend, wenn der Verfügungskläger als „nichtadeliger Namensträger” bezeichnet werde, da er das Adelsprädikat durch Adoption und nicht kraft ehelicher Geburt erworben habe. Das Adelsprädikat in seinem weiteren Namen „von A-B” habe er ebenfalls nicht durch eheliche Geburt erworben. Vielmehr solle einer seiner Vorfahren ein uneheliches Kind eines Herrn von B gewesen sein.

Der Verfügungskläger führe beide Namen mit Adelsprädikaten und erwecke damit den Eindruck adeliger Herkunft. Er betreibe auch zahlreiche Firmen, die große und bekannte Namen wie „Goethe” oder „Schiller” als Firmenbestandteile enthielten. Die Verwendung großer Namen sei deshalb Teil der Selbstdarstellung des Verfügungsklägers als Verleger, Autor und Unternehmer. Als Inhaber einer Mediengruppe stehe der Verfügungskläger auch im Blickpunkt der Öffentlichkeit. Durch die Verwendung mehrerer Namen und Namen mit Adelstiteln, obwohl er bei der Geburt nur einen Namen ohne Adelstitel gehabt habe, habe der Verfügungskläger selbst zum Ausdruck gebracht, dass er großen Wert auf mehrere Namen mit Adelstiteln lege. Er sei an diesen Titeln sogar so stark interessiert, dass er sein Verfahren zur Führung des Namens „A-von B” bis zum Bundesverfassungsgericht geführt habe. Da der Verfügungskläger eine in der Öffentlichkeit umstrittene Persönlichkeit sei, müsse auch davon ausgegangen werden, dass auch die Öffentlichkeit ein Interesse an der Berechtigung der Namensführung habe.

Riddersporen - Herinneringen aan Huis te Merwede

Wie woonden er vroeger in het middeleeuwse Huis te Merwede? Hoe zag het huis er oorspronkelijk uit en hoe groot was het toen? Op deze vragen geeft Erfgoedcentrum DiEP antwoord met de tentoonstelling ‘Riddersporen. Herinneringen aan Huis te Merwede’. Deze expositie over de bekende ruïne brengt de Dordtse Middeleeuwen weer tot leven.

Al bijna 600 jaar staat het ooit stoere en machtige Huis te Merwede, als een verlaten ruïne aan de gelijknamige rivier. Eeuwenlang inspireerde de ruïne tot verhalen, schilderijen en prenten en riep herinneringen op aan lang vervlogen tijden. Dordtenaren van nu kennen hem vooral als plek voor een familiewandelingetje, om te picknicken en te zwemmen of je geheime liefde te ontmoeten. Hoewel de omgeving inmiddels minder romantisch is, brengt dit oudste gebouw van Dordrecht de middeleeuwse geschiedenis tot leven. Begin 2010 werd de ruïne grondig gerestaureerd en dat leverde veel nieuwe informatie op. Reden voor een uitnodigende tentoonstelling.

In Het Hof kan iedereen nu met eigen ogen zien welke sporen de ridders, de Heren van de Merwede, hebben achtergelaten. Met een verbluffend echte filmanimatie waarin Huis te Merwede weer in volle glorie tot leven komt, wordt bezoekers een kijkje geboden in het adellijke leven rond Dordrecht in de Late Middeleeuwen.

Gordon Brown 'blocked knighthood' for Steve Jobs

Gordon Brown blocked an honorary knighthood for Apple founder Steve Jobs, it has emerged.

The then-Prime Minister refused to knight Mr Jobs in 2009 because he turned down an invitation to speak at the Labour Party conference, a former senior Labour MP said.

Mr Jobs was put forward for the honour by the MP for services to technology. Apple is credited with revolutionising the industry in recent years with its iPhone and iPad devices, which have unleashed a boom in mobile internet usage.
The former MP, who left Parliament at the last election, said: “Apple has been the only major global company to create stunning consumer products because it has always taken design as the key component of everything it has produced.
“No other CEO has consistently shown such a commitment.”

Apple was aware of the proposal, he said, and it reached the final stages of approval, but was rejected by Downing Street.

Mr Jobs was snubbed despite the 2005 award of an honorary knighthood to Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and a long-term rival. His friend Bono, the U2 front man, who collaborated with Apple on a special charity edition iPod, is also an honorary KBE.

The former MP was told by Downing Street that the decision was related to a failed attempt to attract Mr Jobs to Labour’s annual conference. Given his status as a superstar of business and technology, such an appearance would have been viewed as a coup for Mr Brown.

A spokeswoman for the former Prime Minister said today: "Mr Brown did not block a knighthood for Steve Jobs".
She declined to discuss the incident further.

Le comte de Paris et son fils le duc de Vendôme ont assisté ce vendredi 21 janvier 2011 à 12h15 à la messe à la mémoire du roi Louis XVI. Cette messe de Requiem, organisée par le comité de l’oeillet blanc, était célébrée à la mémoire du roi Louis XVI, de la famille royale et de toutes les victimes de la révolution française.

Le prince Jean de France est arrivé à midi. Il a été accueilli par les organisateurs de la cérémonie et est resté sur le parvis de l’église pour attendre le Chef de la Maison de France. A 12 h 15 précise le comte de Paris est arrivé suivi de son service s’honneur. Le prince Jean est allé au devant de son pére pour l’accueillir et l’embrasser affectueusement. L’évêque et le clergé attendent les princes sur le parvis de l’église.

Le comte de Paris donne le signal de départ et le cortége rentre dans l’ancienne paroisse des rois de France comble et silencieuse. Le comte de Paris s’installe sur un fauteuil de velours rouge seul au premier rang tandis que son fils est assis au second rang au coté de son cousin le comte Aymar de Rambuteau et du duc de Lorge. On remarque dans l’assistance des écrivains, des historiens, des grands noms et des français de tous horizons venus se souvenir de leur roi martyr. La messe fut particulierement solenelle cette année. Mgr Xavier Baronnet évoqua la vie de Louis XVI en insistant sur le coté humain et ouvert du roi sur l’extérieur.

Le comte de Paris a reçu le premier la communion suivi du Dauphin Jean. Toute l’assistance a communié. Après le Salve Regina, la sortie s’est faite au son des grandes orgues de Saint Germain l’Auxerrois. L’évêque, le clergé et les princes ont regagné le parvis en cortége. Les princes ont remercié chaleureusement l’évêque d’avoir célébré cette cérémonie. Le comte de Paris et le duc de Vendôme ont reçu les voeux et les hommages des français avec simplicité. Le prince Jean était particulièrement souriant et disponible avec chacun. Il a donné des nouvelles du prince Gaston avec plaisir. Le duc de Vendôme semble serein et plus détendu depuis sa rencontre avec la princesse Philoména.

En ce jour de deuil, la Maison royale de France unie retrouve son rôle traditionnel de concorde. L’Espérance monarchique demeure.

Het bestuur van de Stichting Österreich Kultur und Wirtschaft heeft er voor gekozen haar beproefde concept ook dit jaar weer te handhaven.
Dit houdt onder meer in, dat u de gehele avond kunt genieten van de heerlijke hapjes en drankjes die Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin u zal aanbieden.

De 64 debutanten, die op zaterdag 5 februari 2011 de openingsceremonie zullen verzorgen, tonen zich zeer gemotiveerd om onder leiding van dansleraar W. Feddema een prachtige openingsceremonie in te studeren.

Adellijk erfgoed in verval

Huize Sevenaer is één van de twee overgebleven werkende kasteelboerderijen die ons land telt. Eens was het een vooraanstaand landgoed. Maar tegenwoordig lijkt het nog het meest op het kasteel van Doornroosje.

Volledig overwoekerde en instortende gebouwen bepalen het beeld op het landgoed. De eigenaar, de 91-jarige jonkheer Van Nispen, is jarenlang tegengewerkt door de gemeente, maar zal nu hun hulp moeten accepteren om het erfgoed te redden.

De laatste afstammeling van Nassau

'Wilhelmus van Nassau': de eerste woorden van ons volkslied. Wie met die Wilhelmus bedoeld wordt, weten de meesten wel, maar de familie Nassau ligt verder bij ons vandaan, 755 jaar om precies te zijn. Deze Duitse familie is de oorsprong van ons koningshuis en momenteel is daarvan nog maar één familielid in leven.

EenVandaag gaat poolshoogte nemen in Wiesbaden en spreekt met de laatste Duitse Nassau die onze koninklijke familie rijk is.

Geschiedenis
Het Huis Oranje-Nassau komt voort uit het Huis Nassau, een familie uit Duitsland. Stamvader van het Huis Nassau was Walram van Laurenburg (ca. 1146-1198), de eerste graaf van Nassau. Zijn zoon Hendrik II van Nassau de Rijke (ca. 1180-ca. 1250) was gehuwd met Machteld van Gelre en kreeg een aantal zonen, waarvan Walram (ca. 1220-ca. 1276) en Otto (vermoedelijk gestorven in 1289) de bezittingen van hun vader erfden en die later verdeelden. Het Huis van Oranje-Nassau stamt historisch gezien af van Otto, de Ottoonse linie van het Huis Nassau.

Het Huis Oranje-Nassau begon in 1544, toen Willem I, graaf van Nassau-Dillenburg (1533-1584), beter bekend als Willem van Oranje of Willem de Zwijger, het Zuid-Franse vorstendom Orange erfde van zijn neef René van Chalon (officieel René graaf van Nassau en prins van Chalon-Oranje), de zoon van Willems oom Hendrik III.

Met het overlijden van koning Willem III in 1890 stierf de Ottoonse linie van het Huis Nassau in mannelijke lijn uit. Het Nederlandse koningschap ging over op de vrouwelijke lijn via Wilhelmina, de dochter van koning Willem III en zijn tweede vrouw, Emma van Waldeck-Pyrmont.

Noot
Omdat Koning Willem III der Nederlanden in 1890 stierf zonder levende mannelijke nakomelingen, ging volgens de Nassauische Erbverein Luxemburg (volgens de wet konden daar alleen mannen opvolgen) naar de andere tak van de Nassau-familie: de hertogen van Nassau(-Weilburg). In 1890 werd daardoor Adolf Hertog van Nassau groothertog van Luxemburg. Hij werd opgevolgd door zijn zoon Willem IV (Guillaume). Die stierf echter in 1912 zonder mannelijke nakomelingen/familieleden met opvolgingsrechten, dus vond er uiteindelijk toch opvolging in vrouwelijke lijn plaats. Marie Adélaïde volgde als oudste van zes zussen haar vader op. Zij abdiceerde in 1919, beschuldigd van een pro-Duitse houding tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog, en werd opgevolgd door de volgende van de zussen, Charlotte. Aangezien die wel weer mannelijke nakomelingen had, gaat de troon sindsdien weer in mannelijke lijn over. Dus zolang er nog mannen over zijn, zullen er geen vrouwen opvolgen.

Nikolaus (1832-1905), een halfbroer van Groothertog Adolf trouwde in 1867 zonder toestemming met Natalja Alexandrovna Puschkina (dochter van Alexander Puschkin). Zij was al eens eerder getrouwd geweest, en gescheiden. Dat was dus al ruim voordat Adolf de Luxemburgse troon besteeg. Ook in het Nassause hertogdom had hij al geen opvolgingsrechten meer. Hun nakomelingen zijn de graven von Merenberg, waarvan nog één vrouwelijke nakomeling in leven is: gravin Clotilde (* 1941) die gehuwd is met Enno von Rintelen. Zij wonen in Wiesbaden en hebben drie zoons, waarvan er naar mijn weten twee getrouwd zijn. Zij is dus de enige niet buitenechtelijke nakomeling in mannelijke lijn van de Nassaus die nog in leven is.

There were differences of colour, where he was white, and she was the product of the creolisation of the people of the Cape. He came from a background of wealth, she from poverty. He spoke English, and she spoke Dutch.

In the matter of religion, he was Anglican, and she was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church. Perhaps the greatest difference of all was that of education, where Harry was an Oxford graduate, and Martha was a near-illiterate. Nevertheless they lived together in Cape Town, in a relationship that worked.

Then fate played one of those extraordinary hands that were to change everything.

Wapenboek Beyeren gedigitaliseerd door de Koninklijke Bibliotheek

De Koninklijke Bibliotheek heeft een bijzonder middeleeuws handschrift gedigitaliseerd. Het Wapenboek Beyeren bevat meer dan duizend tekeningen van wapenschilden en kan worden gezien als een who's who van de middeleeuwen.

Het Wapenboek Beyeren is geschreven door Claes Heynenzoon, die rond 1400 een van de belangrijkste diplomaten van de Nederlanden was. Het belang van de heraldiek (wapenkunde) was steeds groter geworden in de loop van de middeleeuwen. Zowel op toernooien als op het slagveld waren ridders in helm en harnas volledig onherkenbaar, tenzij zij zich onderscheidden met een wapenschild. Bovendien werden de wapens gebruikt om aan te geven bij welke heer men hoorde, op het slagveld ook geen onbelangrijk gegeven. De heraut beheerde de wapenschilden en introduceerde de ridders bij toernooien, een gedegen kennis van de internationale ridderschap hoorde dus bij zijn taak. De auteur legde zijn kennis van de internationale ridderschap vast in dit wapenboek. Het handschrift is rond 1405 geschreven in Den Haag.

Het Wapenboek Beyeren is in 1581 verkeerd gebonden. In de presentaties op de KB-website is de oorspronkelijke volgorde hersteld: fol. 1-8, 18-35, 49-57, 36-48, 9-17, 58-65.

Nach der Hochzeit bekommt Daniel Westling den Prinzen-Titel. Wie es sich für einen zukünftigen Prinzen gehört, bekam Daniel auch sein eigenes Wappen, das der Königshof jetzt offiziell vorstellte. Löwen und Kronen auf dem blau-gelb-schwarzen Schild verweisen auf die schwedische Monarchie, der Hammer steht für Daniels Heimat, das 6.000-Seelen-Dorf Ockelbo. Neben dem Wappen bekam Daniel auch ein Monogramm – ein Schreibschrift-„D“ unter einer Krone. Tja, angehender Prinzgemahl müsste man sein! (Bunte.de)

Archduke Rudolf of Austria (5 September 1919 – 15 May 2010) was the youngest son of Emperor Charles I of Austria and Zita of Bourbon-Parma. He was born in Prangins, Switzerland where the Austrian Imperial family were staying after they had been sent into exile. He was named after Count Rudolph IV of Habsburg. Rudolf worked as a Wall Street junior executive and a bank director. Archduke Rudolf was married by Archbishop Fulton Sheen to Countess Xenia Czernichev-Besobrasov the daughter of Sergei Aleksandrovich Besobrasov and Countess Elizabeta Cheremeteva, on 22 June 1953 at Tuxedo Park, New York with whom he had four children. Xenia was killed in a car crash on 20 September 1968, in which Rudolf was also seriously injured. Rudolf was married secondly to Princess Anna Gabriele of Wrede (b. 1940) on 15 October 1971 in Ellingen, Bavaria. They have one daughter. Rudolph is survived by two older brothers; Otto and Felix.

History and formationThis important collection of antiquities, begun by Alessandro Farnese, the future Pope Paul III (1543 - 1549), was formed through the purchase of collections (the Sassi and Bernardino Fabio collections), the confiscation of other collections (the Colonna collection) and donations (the Cesi collection), but it increased in size due to the antiques market and, above all, as a result of the numerous finds from the excavations carried out in Rome for the urban renewal of the city, as well as to decorate the newly built Palazzo Farnese (Farnese Palace), where in 1546 Michelangelo designed settings suitable for housing the masterpieces that came to light.

On the death of Pope Paul III, the collection was further enlarged by his nephew, cardinal Alessandro, through the purchase of other collections (the Del Bufalo and Cesarini collections) and the inheritance left in 1587 by Margaret of Austria, the widow first of Alessandro dei Medici and then of Ottavio Farnese, including, for example, the collection of famous gems, which formerly belonged to Lorenzo dei Medici, including the Farnese Cup, and important marble sculptures such as the Pergamene statues. Other acquisitions were promoted by the Farnese’s trusted collector and antiquarian Fulvio Orsini, on whose death in 1600 his collection of gems, coins and busts were left to Odoardo Farnese. This large number of ancient and modern materials, marbles, gems, paintings and books was mainly housed in Palazzo Farnese: the two statues of Hercules, the two statues of “Flora” and the two Gladiators were placed beneath the arches of the courtyard; the Bull was placed in a special enclosure in the second courtyard. The family’s move to Parma marked the beginning of the decline of the Roman collections.

In 1731, with the death of Antonio Farnese, the male line of the family died out, and the collection passed, through Elisabetta Farnese, wife of Philip V of Spain, to their son Charles of Bourbon. When he became king of Naples in 1734, Charles decided to have the collections in Parma moved to the capital of the Kingdom, and he was followed by his son Ferdinand IV who also brought the Roman collections to Naples: in 1787, despite the strong opposition of the Papacy, the collection began to be transferred from the palaces in Rome to the newly established Neapolitan museum.

The collection is currently being reorganised and, together with the exhibits already on display, such as the sculptures from the Baths of Caracalla, the Roman portraits and the gems, it will be arranged according to provenance from the Roman sites: the sculptures from the Farnese Palace, the Farnese Gardens, Villa Madama, the Farnesina Palace, as well as other rooms organised according to theme: the Greek portraits and the sarcophagi.

Balgonie Castle

Balgonie Castle is located on the south bank of the River Leven near Milton of Balgonie, 3.5km east of Glenrothes, Fife, Scotland. The keep dates from the 14th century, and the remaining structures were added piecemeal until the 18th century. The keep has been recently restored, although other parts of the castle are roofless ruins.

Die Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung ist stolz darauf, als Partner des Victoria and Albert Museums »Maharaja: Pracht der indischen Fürstenhöfe« zu präsentieren. München ist neben London der einzige Ort für diese außergewöhnliche Präsentation. Es ist die erste Schau, die einen umfassenden Blick auf die Welt der Maharajas und ihre einzigartig reiche Kultur wirft. Die Ausstellung zeigt mehr als 250 herausragende Objekte; viele kommen zum ersten Mal nach Europa und stammen aus Indiens Herrschersammlungen. Darunter drei Throne, eine Sänfte – angefertigt aus vergoldetem Silber, mit Edelsteinen besetzte Waffen, Gemälde, Fotografien, indischer Turbanschmuck und Schmuck, der bei Cartier und Van Cleef & Arpels im 20. Jahrhundert in Auftrag gegeben wurde.

Die Ausstellungsgegenstände stammen aus drei Jahrhunderten und umspannen den Zeitraum vom 18. Jahrhundert, dem Beginn der großen Ära der Maharajas, bis 1947, dem Ende der britischen Herrschaft in Indien. Damit wird der geschichtliche und gesellschaftliche Wandel der Rolle der Maharajas wie auch ihr Einfluss als Kunstmäzene Indiens und Europas anhand ebenso seltener wie schöner Stücke veranschaulicht.

Die königlichen Sammlungen von Udaipur und Jodhpur stellen einige herausragende Gemälde und Objekte als Leihgaben zur Verfügung. Ein weiteres Objekt, das zum ersten Mal in Europa zu sehen sein wird, ist das Kollier von Patiala, Teil des größten Einzelauftrags, den Cartier jemals ausführte. Das Kollier wurde 1928 fertig gestellt und im Jahr 2002 restauriert; es fasste ursprünglich 2.930 Diamanten und kam auf fast 1000 Karat.

Den Auftakt der Ausstellung macht eine Prozession mit lebensgroß nachgebildeten Elefanten und Pferden, die prächtig geschmückt die silberne Sänfte eines Maharajas tragen und einen Eindruck eines solch bombastischen indischen Umzugs geben.

Danach wird das Herrschermodell Indiens um 1800 und die Rolle der Maharajas als spirituelle und militärische Führer, Politiker und Mäzene anhand von außer-gewöhnlichen Exponaten vorgestellt. Die Symbole ihres Standes sind unter anderem ein »Gaddi« (Thron) aus Udaipur, aufwendig gearbeiteter Turbanschmuck, Zeremonienschwerter wie auch ein goldener, mit Diamanten besetzter »Ankus« (Treibstock für Elefanten). Eine Sänfte aus Jodhpur trug die Maharani (Frau des Maharajas) und erlaubt den seltenen Einblick in das Leben der Frauen in den Palästen. Das Innere der Sänfte ist mit originalen Drucken und Kissen ausgestattet.

Anschließend erzählt die Ausstellung von der Machtverschiebung und dem kulturellen Wandel im Indien des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Der Zerfall des Mogulreichs führte zu einer Zeit politischen Umbruchs, in der rivalisierende indische Herrscher Land für sich beanspruchten. Zu bewundern sind hier der goldene Thron des Maharajas Ranjit Singh wie auch die Waffen und die Rüstung von Tipu Sultan von Mysore und des Maratha-Herrschers Yeshwant Rao Holkar von Indore. Diese Ära ist auch geprägt von der raschen Ausweitung der territorialen Interessen der Britischen Ostindien-Kompanie, was zu einer Vermischung englischer und indischer Kultur führte. Diese spiegelt sich deutlich in Objekten wie dem »Spode« Tafelservice und einem Stuhl wider, der für den Nawab (Herrscher) von Awadh im Stil des »Ägyptischen Revival« entworfen wurde.

Das nächste Kapitel widmet sich den imperialen Versammlungen, den so genannten Durbars des Raj, was großformatige Gemälde und seltenes Filmmaterial anschaulich machen. Dieser Teil der Ausstellung zeigt auch einen Teppich aus Perlen, Rubinen, Smaragden und Diamanten, der für den Maharaja von Barod gewebt und auf dem Durbar im Jahr 1903 ausgestellt wurde.

Der letzte Teil der Ausstellung befasst sich mit der Rolle der »modernen« Maharajas während der Zeit des Raj und dem zunehmend europäischen Einfluss auf ihr Leben. Fotografen und Künstler wie Man Ray, Cecil Beaton oder Rja Ravi Varma dokumentieren mit Porträts von Maharajas und ihrer Frauen sowohl in indischer als auch europäischer Kleidung diesen Wandel.

Das Mäzenatentum der Maharajas bescherte europäischen Unternehmen die größten Aufträge und brachte luxuriöse Arbeiten hervor. Beispiele dafür sind Saris von einem führenden französischen Haut-Couture-Designer, ein Kostüm von Madeleine Vionnet, ein Kollier mit Diamanten und Smaragden von Van Cleef & Arpels und ein Reisekoffer von Louis Vuitton.

Die Maharajas waren auch die Förderer der sich damals entwickelnden europäischen Avantgarde. Ebenfalls in der Ausstellung zu sehen ist Mobiliar im Stil des Art Deco, das in den 30er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts vom Maharaja von Indore für seinen Palast in Auftrag gegeben worden war. Auch architektonische Entwürfe für den Palast Umaid Bhawan, eine moderne Residenz, die auf Wunsch des Maharajas von Jodhpur erbaut wurde, ist zu sehen.

Diese Ausstellung belegt, dass Indiens Herrscher nicht nur bedeutende Kunstmäzene im eigenen Land, sondern auch im Westen waren. Gleichzeitig wird die faszinierende geschichtliche Entwicklung der Rolle der Maharajas vom frühen 18. Jahrhundert bis zu den letzten Tagen des Raj erzählt.

Anlässlich der Ausstellungseröffnung in München wird His Highness Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur anwesend sein.

Die Ausstellung steht unter der Schirmherrschaft des indischen Botschafters in Deutschland und des deutschen Botschafters in Indien.

Duitse adel komt voorzichtig thuis

LÜBBENAU - Na de Duitse hereniging keerden de Zu Lynars terug naar hun landgoed in de oude DDR. Pas nu zijn ze er echt welkom.

Voor Rochus graaf zu Lynar (36) was de val van de Muur in 1989 een vreugdevolle, zij het tamelijk abstracte gebeurtenis. Hij woonde destijds in Portugal, waar zijn vader voor het chemieconcern Hoechst werkte. Duitsland was voor hem slechts het land van herkomst.

Nu, twintig jaar later, stelt hij vast: ‘Wat de Duitse hereniging betekent, hebben wij ondervonden.’ In 1991 werden het in de vroegere DDR gelegen stamslot Lübbenau en 4.500 hectare land aan de grafelijke familie gerestitueerd. Sindsdien hebben de Zu Lynars hun leven in dienst gesteld van het familiebezit en de waarden die er voor hen aan zijn verbonden.

Tot de Wende vertegenwoordigde het Slot Lübbenau voor de jongere telgen van de familie hooguit een ‘vage melancholieke’ waarde. Ze kenden de gele foto’s en de oude verhalen – hoewel ze daar niet overdreven veel belang in stelden. En ze waren op de hoogte van de omstandigheden die in 1944 tot de onteigening van het landgoed hadden geleid.

Rochus’ grootvader, graaf Wilhelm Friedrich (‘Wilfried’) Rochus zu Lynar (1899-1944) was betrokken bij de mislukte staatsgreep van 20 juli, en werd hiervoor ter dood veroordeeld. Zijn twee oudste zoons, die in het leger dienden, werden gedegradeerd en op ‘Himmelfahrtskommando’ naar het Oostfront gestuurd (waar de oudste sneuvelde).

Rochus groeide op in het vage besef dat hij ‘een ereplicht’ tegenover zijn grootvader te vervullen had, en dat diens nagedachtenis ‘in stilte verzorgd’ moest worden. Tastbaar was deze nalatenschap echter niet meer. De Duitse hereniging leek daar aanvankelijk ook geen verandering in te brengen. Om aan uitputtende juridische procedures te ontkomen, had de Bondsrepubliek bepaald dat ‘gesocialiseerde’ landgoederen niet aan de oorspronkelijke eigenaren (of hun nazaten) zouden worden gerestitueerd. Het Slot Lübbenau vormde echter een uitzondering op die regel, omdat de onteigening al tijdens het Derde Rijk haar beslag had gekregen.

Actief tegengewerkt door de Treuhandanstalt, de organisatie die de privatisering van staatsbezit van de DDR organiseerde, hebben de Zu Lynars hun familiebezit – of wat daar na veertig jaar wanbeheer nog van over was – herwonnen. ‘Voor de oudere generatie was dat een ereplicht tegenover graaf Wilfried’, zegt Rochus. ‘Wij, de jongeren, hebben die beslissing nooit ter discussie gesteld. Hoewel we vanaf dat moment ons leven niet meer in vrijheid konden inrichten.’

In het najaar van 1990 brachten Rochus’ ouders, Guido en Beatrix zu Lynar, een eerste inspectiebezoek aan het gehavende slot. ‘In de nadagen van de DDR was er een hotel in ondergebracht, maar de bedrijfsleidster wilde mijn ouders niet ontvangen. Uiteindelijk heeft een receptioniste hen ’s avonds heimelijk rondgeleid. De Zu Lynars kwamen na een afwezigheid van bijna vijftig jaar dus terug als dieven in de nacht.’

De bevolking van Lübbenau reageerde niet hartelijker. ‘Men had drie zwaarwegende bezwaren tegen ons: we kwamen uit het Westen, we waren van adel, en we hoefden niet voor het slot te betalen.’ Vader Guido stelde zich in op een ijstijd van zeven jaar. Deze duurde echter veel langer. ‘Mijn ouders ontvingen onaangename telefoontjes en lompe dreigbrieven. Mijn jongste broer, die een dorpsschool bezocht, was volkomen geïsoleerd. Plaatsgenoten die ons niet meden, kregen daar in eigen kring moeilijkheden mee.’

Achteraf heeft Rochus wel begrip voor de ondergane animositeit. ‘De nieuwe stadsdelen van Lübbenau worden overwegend bevolkt door mensen die hun brood verdienden in de winning van bruinkool. In DDR-tijden behoorden ze tot de elite, na de Wende bleek hun levenswerk opeens niets meer waard te zijn. Het is niet zo gek dat hun wrok zich op de veronderstelde winnaars van de Wende richt.’

De Zu Lynars op hun beurt waren zo onverstandig om voor de exploitatie van hun slothotel vooral West-Duitse bedrijfsleiders in te huren. Afgezien van het feit dat deze – op één uitzondering na – niet goed functioneerden, hebben ze de DDR-ressentimenten tegen de ‘Wessi’s in het kasteel’ aangewakkerd.

Toen Rochus in 2001 – niet gehinderd door enige horeca-ervaring – de zakelijke leiding van het hotel op zich nam, was de stemming onder het personeel ‘miserabel’ en was nog geen boekjaar met winst afgesloten. ‘Nu hebben we uitsluitend nog mensen uit de buurt in dienst, en schrijven we zwarte cijfers.’

In de salon, bij de open haard die door een werknemer geregeld van nieuw brandhout wordt voorzien, telt de graaf in een luie stoel zijn zegeningen. ‘Het personeel geeft blijk van een ontroerende betrokkenheid bij het bedrijf. Onlangs stelde een van onze mensen voor om gezamenlijk aan de lotto mee te doen, en een eventuele winst in de bouw van een nieuwe vleugel te investeren. De onttroonde elite van de DDR ziet er wel streng op toe dat de invloedssfeer van de familie Zu Lynar zich niet te ver buiten het eigen domein uitstrekt. Zo verijdelde de postcommunistische partij Linke een poging om een straat naar graaf Wilfried te vernoemen.

Diens kleinzoon Rochus heeft niet de illusie dat het reëel bestaand socialisme van de DDR dood en begraven is. ‘Mijn vader, die nu 76 jaar is, zal hier nog wel sterven. En ik misschien ook nog wel. Maar als je ziet hoe snel in tijden van crisis de invloed van de staat groeit, zou het me niet verbazen als mijn kinderen opnieuw onteigend zullen worden.’

Nieuwe zakenlui halen oude adel in

De lijst met de rijkste Belgische ondernemersfamilies omvat nog altijd heel wat adellijke namen, maar zij worden flink ingehaald door families die hun fortuin in het recente verleden maakten. Dat blijkt uit een ranglijst van de 100 rijkste Belgische zakenfamilies die het weekblad Trends vandaag publiceert.

De top-100 van het tijdschrift is geen weergave van ,,de rijkste Belgische families''. Het is immers gebaseerd op het ,,professionele'' vermogen en niet op het totale privé-vermogen. Dat onderscheid is ietwat arbitrair, maar het komt erop neer dat Trends geen inventaris heeft gemaakt van, pakweg, het vastgoedpatrimonium of de beleggingsportefeuilles van de rijke families. Families die hun bedrijf verkochten, komen er ook niet in voor.

Met stip op nummer één staan de adellijke families achter de brouwerijgroep InBev, met een zakelijk vermogen van meer dan 7 miljard euro. Ze worden gevolgd door twee andere usual suspects , de families Solvay en Frère. De ,,oude adel'' wordt ook nog goed vertegenwoordigd door namen als Janssen (UCB) en Boël (Sofina).

Maar die oude adel heeft wel gezelschap gekregen van heel wat ,,nieuwe rijken'', zoals de families Colruyt (van de gelijknamige supermarktketen), Saverys (scheepvaartgroep CMB) en Coucke (farmabedrijf Omega Pharma, op nummer 24). De rijkdom van de Belgische adel raakt na enkele generaties vanzelf versnipperd als gevolg van ons erfrecht, verklaart Fortis-voorzitter Maurice Lippens - zelf een telg van een van de rijkste families - in het tijdschrift.

De ranglijst is overigens geen product van exacte wetenschap. De waarde van familiale belangen in beursgenoteerde bedrijven kon gemakkelijk berekend worden via de beurskoers. Voor niet-genoteerde bedrijven gaat het echter om een raming die in essentie gebaseerd is op een vergelijking met beursgenoteerde bedrijven. Dat een familie op de lijst voorkomt, betekent meer dan de exacte plaats in de ranglijst.

Sommige rijke families zijn ook niet in de lijst vertegenwoordigd omdat het niet volledig duidelijk is of en in welke bedrijven ze nog participeren. Dat is onder andere het geval voor de families Ullens de Schooten en Wittouck (de stichters van Artal, de holding boven onder andere Weight Watchers) en Leysen (KBC).

Opvallend is nog dat aandeelhouders van technologiebedrijven nauwelijks in de lijst vertegenwoordigd zijn. Tijdens de internetbubbel van enkele jaren geleden, toen een bedrijf als Lernout & Hauspie op de beurs tot 11 miljard euro waard was, zou het lijstje ongetwijfeld een paar andere namen geteld hebben.

Stewart en Jackson nu beiden 'Sir'

De Britse acteur Patrick Stewart en de Nieuw-Zeelandse regisseur Peter Jackson zijn beiden geridderd en mogen daarom als 'Sir' door het leven.

Stewart, die onder meer in Star Trek en X-Men speelde, werd geridderd voor zijn verdienste aan drama. De acteur heeft ook veel toneelrollen op zijn naam staan. Hij zei dat hij erg trots is op zijn nieuwe titel en dat het theater hem altijd al veel plezier gaf.

In Nieuw-Zeeland werd de titel voor het eerst in tien jaar weer uitgereikt. Jackson (Lord of the Rings) noemde het " belangrijker dan de Oscars". Z'n Rings- trilogie leverde zeventien Oscars op.

Fritz Adam Hermann Opel, since 1918 von Opel (May 4, 1899 - April 8, 1971), was the only child of Wilhelm von Opel, and a grandson of Adam Opel, founder of the Opel Company. He is remembered mostly for his spectacular demonstrations of rocket propulsion that earned him the nickname "Rocket Fritz".

Von Opel was born in Rüsselsheim and educated at the technical university of Darmstadt. After graduation, he was made director of testing for Opel and also put in charge of publicity. In the 1920s, he became interested in using rockets in publicity stunts for the company and sought advice from Max Valier of the newly-formed Verein für Raumschiffahrt (VfR - "Spaceflight Society") and Friedrich Sander, a pyrotechnics manufacturer from Bremerhaven.

On March 15, 1928, von Opel tested his first rocket-powered car, the RAK.1 and achieved a top speed of 75 km/h (47 mph) in it, proving the concept. Less than two months later, he reached a speed of 230 km/h (143 mph) in the RAK.2, driven by 24 solid-fuel rockets.

Later that same year, he purchased a sailplane named the "Ente" (duck in German) from Alexander Lippisch and attached rocket motors to it, creating the world's first rocket plane on June 11. The aircraft exploded on its second test flight, before von Opel had a chance to pilot it himself, so he commissioned a new aircraft, also called the RAK.1 from Julius Hatry, and flew it at Frankfurt-am-Main on September 30, 1929. In the meantime, another mishap had claimed the RAK.3, a rocket-powered railway car powered by 30 solid-fuel rockets and which reached a speed of 254 km/h (157 mph).

Von Opel left the Opel company and Germany after 1929 and died in Samedan, Switzerland.

Fritz von Opel is the father of Formula One driver Rikky von Opel.

[archive] One of Britain's most resounding titles, which for sheer euphony tops that of many a noble duke and earl, is held by the Lord of the Manor of Circum cum Wilcocks alias Fransham Parva in the parish of Little Fransham. Last week, along with 26 other manorial lordships, it was knocked down at auction for a paltry $924. At the same auction, London Bookseller William Alfred Foyle bought himself five lordships for $5,400.

Unlike the patents of nobility borne by Britain's peers, which no man can buy, the ancient feudal title, lord of the manor, has long been negotiable. In times past it carried with it many valuable perquisites, and it was not unusual for the old squire in the big house up on the hill to sell them off for a spot of ready cash. The 27 titles up for sale last week were part of a collection bought purely as investments in the 19th century by a shrewd old Essex solicitor named Joseph Beaumont.

Since Beaumont's day, however, Britain's Property Acts have wiped out most of the manorial lord's "perks" (or perquisites;. Today the best a lord of the manor can hope for is a few pounds a year from public utilities for putting telegraph poles on his property. But the deeds are still inscribed on heavy, ancient parchments that make magnificent souvenirs. Unfortunately, the deeds cannot be taken out of the country, which discouraged Americans last week from scooping up such handsome titles as Lord of the Manor of Overhall and Netherhall, or Callis Metholds and Wimbolds.

Eubank's Lordship title for sale

Former world champion boxer Chris Eubank's Lordship of the Manor of Brighton is up for sale.

The title, which he bought for £45,000 in 1996, was among assets, including property, stripped from the fighter after he was made bankrupt in 2005.

Robert Smith, chairman of the Manorial Society of Great Britain, said the Lordship, now valued at £35,000, had not been a great investment. "But I guess you could say that about anything at the moment," he said.

Eubank, who lives in Brighton, was declared bankrupt owing £1.3m to the taxman, which he blamed on bad advice given to him during his career.

Domesday Book
He became the WBO middleweight champion in 1990 and successfully defended his title 14 times.
The Lordship of the Manor of Brighton dates back to the Domesday Book, which states that its holder was entitled to a tax on the number of herrings that were landed in the fishing village. At the time there were about 4,000 a year.

Mr Smith said the tax, then about £20, was still being collected in the 1860s when the title was owned by Lord Sackville.
Well into the 17th Century, the Lord of the Manor was also collecting a tax on the smoking of fish, which was used as a method of preserving the catch.

Mr Smith said that if no suitable offers were received for the title it would be auctioned.

My lord! Four East Lancashire titles up for sale

[Archive] ANYONE with visions of grandeur is being given the perfect chance to bid their way into high society - by buying a lordship.

Decendants of the Towneley family have put up for sale 29 prestigious titles, including four in East Lancashire.

For around £7,000 any bidder can officially name themselves lord of the manor in either Accrington Newhold, Bowland, Rossendale or Habergham Eaves.

And the winning bidders, when the items come up for auction next month, will be able to use their new titles on their passports, credit cards and cheque books.

The titles, which are expected to reach between £4,000 to £7,000 each, have been put up for sale by Lord Charles O'Hagan, who is suffering ill health.

Lord O'Hagan, 65, whose real name is Charles Towneley, said that the cash raised by the sale would help pay for medical bills.

The former MEP for Devon lives in Somerset. He said: "It is the sensible option to sell the titles.

"They do not add to my life and I do not live in the area any more.

"If I still had a big estate in Burnley then they would have some point but that has long ceased to be the case."

The Towneley family sold Towneley Hall and the surrounding park to the local authority in 1901 for the then sizable sum of £9,000.

Lord O'Hagan added: "The titles have been in my family for many hundreds of years and I will be sad to see them go but I am sure that they will be popular at auction.

"It is a very unique sale and there is a lot of history behind these titles.

"I hope they are sold to people with a local connection.

"I think it is a very romantic thing and it would be nice if people in the area bought the titles and kept them going locally."

The titles will not allow a bearer a seat in the House of Lords but can be passed down from generation to generation.

The new lords or ladies will be eligible for membership to the Manorial Society of Great Britain, whose governing council includes the Earl of Shrewesbury and Talbot, Lord Sudeley and Sir Desmond de Silva QC.

Robert Smith, Manorial Auctioneers in London, is a leading expert on the sale of Lordships.

He said: "The lordships are like a status symbol and will be very appealing to people with a certain level of income.

"The rich have always displayed their wealth and it can manifest itself in many ways.

"Some people like jewellery or expensive cars.

"Others want a big house or a title like this.

"Lordships have been bought and sold by the rich since 1066 and there is no change now.

"People will be interested in the auction either for sentimental reasons or just for the prestige."

The lord of the manor can expect few privileges, Mr Smith said.

As lord you have rights of owning the land three-feet under the soil, but usually there is no value of owning the "mineral rights" if there are no "commercially exploitable materials".

The other 24 lordships for sale are located across the country and include East Hall in Essex, Ridings Court in Buckinghamshire and Alton in Staffordshire.

The auction takes place on May 20 at Stationers Hall, Ave Maria Lane, London.

Stanley homeowner buys Lord of the Manor title

[Archive] PROUD homeowner Kenneth Osborne Grant was not to the manor born, but from his modest 19th-century terraced house he is Lord of all he surveys.

Retired civil servant Kenneth, 79, can officially call himself the Lord of Stanley Manor, after buying the title from Ireland’s Baron O’Hagan,.

Kenneth, who lives with his “Heinz 57” dog Max in a terraced house in Dunn Street, Annfield Plain, near Stanley, County Durham in the heart of his Stanley Manor, will not divulge how much he paid for the title.

But the insignia which goes along with the title made council planners sit up and take notice at a recent public meeting.

Kenneth, wearing another of his hats as founder/director of The Osborne Trust, a conservation group which aims to preserve Victorian and Edwardian buildings in Stanley town centre, spoke at a recent meeting over plans for the town centre.

He said: “When I walked into the meeting in my full regalia it did cause some heads to turn. It was the first time I had worn it in public.”

Kenneth, the youngest of four children and a former pupil of Heaton Grammar School, Newcastle, bought the title through the Manorial Society.

He explained: “I read last year how the Northumberland Lordship of Softley was to be auctioned in London for between £4000 and £5000.

“I put in a bid but I was unsuccessful. I am quite pleased now, because with hindsight I would not have wanted to be known as Lord Softley . . . not living in Annfield Plain!

“But a few months later the auctioneer Robert Smith of Manorial Auctioneers got in touch to tell me that the Lordship of Stanley Manor was coming up for sale.

“He told me the asking price, and I managed to get it down by a few hundred pounds.”

A previous Lord of Stanley Manor was a member of the Lumley family, who had their own castle, Lumley Castle, now a hotel in Chester-le-Street.

Kenneth added: “The manor covers the whole of Stanley and Tanfield, as well as parts of Annfield Plain and Burnopfield. It includes the Causey Arch viaduct which was built in 1725 and which is the oldest railway bridge in the world.

“The title does not give me any proprietorial rights and I cannot sit in the House of Lords, but who would want to?

“I don’t smoke, I drink very little and I am a good saver so I spent my money on this title which gives me a great deal of pleasure and which amuses my friends.”

As Lord of Stanley Manor, Kenneth can use his title on his passport, chequebook and credit card and is a member of the Manorial Society of Great Britain.

Members of the society include the Earl of Shrewsbury and Talbot, the Earl of Shannon, Lord Sudeley and Sir Desmond de Silva QC. It holds functions throughout the year, including an annual reception at the House of Lords.

Mit Dekret vom 08. Dezember 2009, dem Hochfest der ohne Erbsünde empfangenen Jungfrau und Gottesmutter Maria, hat der Hochmeister die Commenda Autonoma „Santa Maria degli Alemanni" errichtet, nachdem die zuständige Ballei „Ad Tiberim", der Generalrat des Deutschen Ordens sowie S. Exz. Mons. Michele Pennisi, Bischof der Diözese Piazza Armerina, der Errichtung zugestimmt hatten. Ein lang gehegter Wunsch der sizilianischen Familiaren ging damit in Erfüllung. Nach über 500 Jahren wurde damit die Tradition des Ordens auf der Mittelmeerinsel wieder aufgenommen, die die Confratres nun bereits im Namen ihrer Komturei führen: die „Santa Maria degli Alemanni" ist eine in der Chiesa Madre von Gela hoch verehrte Ikone der Gottesmutter, die der Tradition nach von Deutschordensbrüdern aus dem Heiligen Land nach Sizilien gebracht worden ist. Der Hochmeister reiste aus diesem Anlass in Begleitung des Generalökonomen P. Mag. Frank Bayard sowie einer Schwester und eines weiteren Bruders nach Sizilien, wo das Ereignis am 15. Dezember mit einem festlichen Pontifikalamt des Hochmeisters in der Kathedrale von Piazza Armerina gefeiert wurde.

Am kommenden Samstag findet um 15.15 Uhr der alljährliche Ritterschlag des Johanniterordens in der Komturkirche zu Nieder-Weisel statt. 57 Mitglieder des Johanniterordens, darunter zwei Herren aus den USA, zwei Herren aus Österreich und ein Herr aus der Schweiz, werden morgen durch den Herrenmeister des Johanniterordens, S. K. H. Dr. Oskar Prinz v. Preußen, zu Rechtsrittern geschlagen. Weiter ernennet der Herrenmeister während des Gottesdienstes Ruprecht Graf Castell zu Rüdenhausen zum neuen Ordensstatthalter und Dr. Peter Rhode zum neuen Ordensschatzmeister. Die Festpredigt hält der Bischof der Evangelischen Kirche A. B. in Österreich, Dr. Michael Bünker. Ihm wird das Ehrenritterkreuz des Johanniterordens verliehen. Insgesamt erwarten die Johanniter am Wochenende in Nieder-Weisel wieder über 200 Gäste.

Marion Hedda Ilse Gräfin Dönhoff (* 2. Dezember 1909 auf Schloss Friedrichstein in Ostpreußen; † 11. März 2002 auf Schloss Crottorf bei Friesenhagen, Rheinland-Pfalz) war Chefredakteurin und Mitherausgeberin der Wochenzeitung Die Zeit. Sie gilt als eine der bedeutendsten Publizistinnen der bundesdeutschen Nachkriegszeit. In dieser Eigenschaft war sie Gesprächspartnerin für führende Politiker in der Welt.

Obwohl sie ihre ostpreußische Heimat während der Kriegsgeschehen des Zweiten Weltkriegs verloren hatte, setzte sie sich für eine Versöhnung zwischen den Staaten des Ostblocks und dem Westen ein. Sie unterstützte in ihren Leitartikeln die aktive Ostpolitik, lehnte die Apartheid in Südafrika ab und rief zu freiheitlichem Denken, Toleranz und Gerechtigkeit auf. Weitere Hauptthemen waren der Widerstand gegen Hitler und die Bekämpfung der Auswüchse des Kapitalismus.

Marion Gräfin Dönhoff ist für ihre Tätigkeit mit zahlreichen Auszeichnungen geehrt worden, unter anderem mit dem Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels. Als Buchautorin – sie schrieb mehr als zwanzig Bücher – war sie ebenfalls erfolgreich. Ihre bekanntesten Titel sind Namen, die keiner mehr nennt, die Geschichte ihrer Familie und der ostpreußischen Heimat, und Um der Ehre willen, persönliche Erinnerungen an ihre Freunde, die am Widerstand teilgenommen und ihr Leben verloren hatten.

Verehrte Leser und Leserinnen, heute Abend beginnt die Weihnachtszeit, in der wir die Menschwerdung Gottes feiern; in wenigen Tagen beginnt das neue bürgerliche Jahr. Es ist dies für mich ein Anlass, Ihnen für Ihr Interesse an der Homepage des Hochmeisteramtes des Deutschen Ordens zu danken. Wir konnten uns in diesem Jahr über mehr als 400 000 Zugriffe freuen und für nächstes Jahr planen wir einige Erweiterungen der Homepage, vor allem im Bereich „Geschichte", und wir werden auch mehr über den Alltag in unseren Konventen, in unseren Pfarreien und verschiedenen Einrichtungen berichten.

Ich wünsche Ihnen allen, auch im Namen aller Mitglieder des Konvents am Hochmeisteramt ein gesegnetes und besinnliches Weihnachtsfest, voll von Freude über die Geburt unseres Herrn Jesus Christus und Freude am Glauben überhaupt. Millions of Germans and other continental Europeans will settle down in front of their TV sets on New Year's Eve for what has become an annual ritual -- the airing of an aged British comedy sketch starring a long-dead music-hall comedy called "Dinner for One."

The 15-minute sketch, acted by Freddie Frinton and May Warden, will also be televised by every other major regional public-TV channel in Germany and by a scattering of commercial networks.

The black-and-white British slapstick sketch, totally unknown in the English-speaking world, has become the highest-rated TV show in German history, and has spawned fan clubs and a cult following of viewers who stage parties to recreate the sketch at home.

In a nation not exactly known for its ribaldry and thigh-slapping humor, the New Year's Eve showing of "Dinner for One" never fails to bring down the house. There are viewers who have memorized every gesture, every line of the English-only sketch.

In 2010 bestaat de Grote of Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk van Breda 600 jaar. Dat was voor de beheerstichting de reden om opdracht te geven tot het organiseren van een expositie over de periode 1637 – 1813

Expositiesamensteller Walter van de Garde creëerde na een voorbereiding van twee jaar een mega-presentatie die het verhaal vertelt van de Grote Kerk van Breda in de protestantse constellatie van die tijd. Van de Garde tekende ook voor de eerdere succesvolle exposities “Pronk en Praal” met 150.000 bezoekers en “Praal en Devotie”, die 100.000 bezoekers trok.

In de prachtig lichte wandelkerk, die de Grote Kerk vandaag de dag nog steeds is, wordt het interieur van de 17e en de 18e eeuw herschapen. Met de mensen, die in die periode invloedrijk waren. Niet alleen in de kerk, maar ook op diverse andere terreinen van het geestelijke, politieke, maatschappelijke en militaire leven van die tijd. Met als verbindende factor hun relatie met de leden van ons koninklijk huis: de Oranje-Nassaus.

De blikvanger van de expositie is de zee aan wapenborden. Tot 1798 hing de grote kerk er vol mee. Op last van Napoleon, die de gelijkheid van de Franse revolutie in alle door hem veroverde landen dicteerde, moesten alle invloeden die aan adel gerelateerd waren, verdwijnen. Zo ook de wapenborden met wapens van families, die eeuwenlang een prominente rol in de Nederlanden hebben gespeeld. De borden werden vernietigd, verbrand, kapotgeslagen en verdwenen uit de kerk om nooit meer terug te keren. Dat gebeurde ook in alle andere kerken in de Nederlanden. Gelukkig waren deze borden, ook wel rouwborden genoemd, een aantal jaar voor de verwijdering minutieus nagetekend door baron Yvoi, die tijdens een rondreis alle wapenborden beschreef en natuurgetrouw in een document kopieerde. Dit was voor Walter van de Garde de basis voor een reconstructie, die hij samen maakte met medewerkers van het Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie. De 277 gereconstrueerde borden keren terug in de Grote Kerk en herscheppen zodoende het beeld van de kerk zoals dat in de 17e en 18e eeuw was. Een beeld dat nergens anders in Nederland te zien is. En ook maar drie maanden te zien zal zijn.

GRAFMONUMENTEN
De tweede blikvanger van de expositie en vast onderdeel van het interieur van de kerk vormt de rijkgeschakeerde zerkenvloer. Tijdens de tientallen restauraties in de afgelopen eeuwen zijn veel zerken naar oneigenlijke locaties verhuisd. Tijdens de laatste grootschalige restauratie (van 1995-1998) is na een onderzoek van Walter van de Garde de zerkenvloer gereconstrueerd naar de situatie zoals die in 1828 bestond. In dat jaar verbood de overheid het begraven in kerken. Elke zerk en grafmonument toont de namen van de personen, die zo’n belangrijke rol in Breda vervulden, dat zij in de Grote kerk begraven mochten worden. Wandelend door de kerk lees je die namen maar ontdek je niet het verhaal achter van de mens, die daar begraven ligt.
Door een unieke samenwerking tussen de Digital Entertainment Academy (onderdeel van de NHTV) werden alle grafmonumenten digitaal ontsloten. In de speciaal daarvoor ingerichte mediaplayers vind je de zerken op positie, op naam en wordt de geschiedenis van de persoon, die daaronder begraven ligt, gepresenteerd.

MENSEN
Mensen brengen de geschiedenis tot leven; zo ook in de expositie Woord&Wapen.
In de expositie worden 15 dominees en 8 militairen belicht. Zij hebben geacteerd in de periode, die de expositie in beeld brengt. Dominees die niet alleen dominee waren en militairen die niet alleen militair waren. Ze vervulden naast hun eigenlijke beroep een bijzondere maatschappelijke rol in de toenmalige Nederlandse samenleving. Vaak had dat te maken met hun relatie met de Oranje-Nassaus. In ieder geval had elke in de expositie opgevoerde persoon een bewezen band met de Oranje’s.

Dominees
Eén van die dominees, Frederik van Renesse, was (in naam van Oranje) belast met reformatie van het Katholieke zuiden. Een andere dominee, Petrus Haack, speelde een belangrijke rol bij de terugkeer van Koning Willem I, maar hij was ook degene die de laatst onthoofde misdadiger op de Grote Markt van Breda naar zijn executieplaats begeleidde. Een derde dominee Francicus Plante, reisde met Johan Maurits van Nassau (die van Het Mauritshuis in Den Haag) naar Brazilië. Van al deze, maar ook andere dominees zijn bijzondere voorwerpen te zien die deze bijzondere taken illustreren. En Vincent van Gogh, de opa van de beroemde schilder Vincent van Gogh, was dominee in de Grote Kerk. Ook hij is, in de vorm van een originele tekening van zijn kleinzoon, in de expositie aanwezig.

Militairen
Diverse hoge militairen, die gediend hebben onder de Oranje-Nassaus, liggen op een ereplaats in de Grote Kerk van Breda begraven, hebben er een wapenbord en maken een prominent deel van de expositie uit. Als bevelvoerende officieren hebben ze grote verdiensten gehad op het slagveld. Daarnaast waren ze belangrijk als voortrekkers in de ontwikkeling van de militaire krijgskunde, het ontwerpen van fortificaties en wapens. Voor hun verdiensten werden de meesten beloond met het gouverneursschap van Breda. Deze militairen dienden vaak generatie op generatie in het Staatse leger.
Maar ook aan deze militaire families gerelateerde mensen komen aan bod: zo was Josias Eckart rentmeester van de Bredase Nassause Domeinen. Hij hield 40 jaar lang een dagboek bij met weerwaarnemingen. Zijn notities worden in meteorologische kringen nog steeds gezien als de meest accurate weerwaarnemingen over een lange periode in zijn tijd. Dit gegeven was aanleiding tot contact met het KNMI en dat leidde tot een speciaal project binnen de expositie: het weer van 1710 en 2010. In samenwerking met het KNMI wordt tijdens de expositie iedere dag getoond wat voor het weer het 300 jaar geleden op die datum was en hoe dat er op dezelfde dag in 2010 is. In die KNMI-presentatie is ook te zien met welke middelen toen (1710) de weersvoorspelling werd bepaald en met welke middelen dat nu gebeurt.

PROTESTANTISME
Tot slot wordt in de expositie aandacht besteed aan de gebruiken die in de periode 1637-1813 bij de Protestantse (Staats)kerk gemeengoed waren: de rituelen rond doop, geboorte, huwelijk en dood, maar ook het avondmaal. Unieke objecten uit de collectie van de Protestantse gemeente Breda maar ook zeldzame stukken uit collecties van nationale musea vormen daarvoor de basis.

Kortom: een bijzondere expositie waarin zoveel te zien en te beleven is dat het een “must see”-belevenis is op het gebied van religieus erfgoed!

Deutscher Orden - Feierliche Investitur von Familiaren im Dom zu Bamberg

"Ich verspreche zur Ehre Gottes und Sankt Mariens dem Hochmeister der Brüder vom Deutschen Haus Sankt Mariens in Jerusalem als Familiare den Deutschen Orden durch Gebet, persönlichen Einsatz und tatkräftige Hilfe zu unterstützen und verpflichte mich zur Einhaltung der im Familiareninstitut festgelegten Ordnung." Es war ein feierlicher Akt, als die zwölf Neufamiliaren des Deutschen Ordens am 17. Oktober 2009 in Bamberg im Kaiserdom während ihrer Investitur dieses Versprechen gegenüber dem Hochmeister des Ordens, Dr. Bruno Platter, abgaben. Rund 400 Ordensmitglieder waren zu diesem Anlass in die Domstatdt in Franken gekommen.

Nach einer Vesper am Vorabend mit Weihbischof Werner Radspieler aus dem Erzbistum Bamberg fand am Samstagvormittag das Pontifikalamt zur Investitur statt. Die Aufnahme von elf Männern und einer Frau als Familiaren in den Deutschen Orden bezeichnete der Hochmeister als "die Verlebendigung der Taufgnade und der Firmung." Sie sein eine Intensivierung des christlichen Lebens, durch welche die Neufamiliaren Zeugen für Gottes Liebe und Barmherzigkeit würden. In diesem Zusammenhang erinnerte der Hochmeister an den Hl. Ignatius von Antiochien, dessen Fest an diesem Tag begangen wurde. Dieser Heilige stand mit seinem ganzen Leben dafür ein, Christus in seinem Tun und Verkündigen bis hin zu seinem Tod als Märtyrer zu bezeugen.

Ein Vorbild, wie es einst der hl. Ignatius war, sollen nach den Worten des Hochmeisters auch die Familiaren sein; sie sollen fest stehen in der Gemeinschaft mit Christus und den Menschen Orientierung geben. Der schwarze Ordensmantel, den die Familiaren während der Investitur überreicht bekamen, soll für sie als Zeichen des Schutzes für Schwache gelten, das Halskreuz soll die Familiaren als Christen erkennbar machen, die Stellung beziehen zu den Grundwerten des Glaubens. Bereits während der Vesper am Vorabend hatten die Familiaren den Rosenkranz erhalten als Zeichen für ihre besondere Verbindung zu Gott im Gebet.

Die Aufnahme in das Institut der Familiaren ist laut Hochmeister Platter nicht vergleichbar mit der Mitgliedschaft in einem normalen Verein. "Hier kommt es zu einer religiösen Verbindung zwischen den Kandidaten und Gott. Sie sollen in Zukunft Gott-Träger sein." Und er apellierte zum Abschluss seiner Predigt noch einmal auf die Neuaufgenommenen: "Geht mit uns, arbeitet mit uns zur Ehre Gottes. Seid eng mit Christus und untereinander verbunden."

Vienna Ball to come to Jakarta this October

Get your dancing shoes on and start practicing the steps for Jakarta's first Vienna Ball, to be held by the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski on Oct. 30.

Balls are a tradition in Austria, with hundreds held every year by various institutions and organizations. The elegant dance events usually start with an opening ceremony in which debutantes perform different dances. Debutantes, young women between 16 and 22 years old, will announce their arrival in the upper crust society with their first ball dance at the event.

The debutantes have been receiving dance lessons from Heinz Heidenreich, who was a principle dancer at the Vienna State Opera Ballet Company in 1982. He currently works as choreographer, production manager, assistant director and organizer for special Viennese events in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, New York and Athens.

General Manager of the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Gerhard E. Mitrovits, said that six families (both Indonesian and foreign) have signed up their daughters, and sons, for the ball.

"I encourage all parents to have their daughters and sons participate in the event as it will be an exceptional opportunity for the young people to enter the eligible social network," he said.

"We expect to have around 80 debutantes. They don't have to buy tickets but they must wear a dress, priced at Rp 900,000 *US$90*, and the young men must wear a tuxedo priced at Rp 1.3 million."

Era Soekamto, who has been designing fashion for teenagers for 11 years, will be making the special outfits. Era said that she would design three gowns for the debutantes: one sleeveless and two bustier dresses. The dresses will have feminine look with ruffles and Swarovski crystal.

"The debutantes can wear their own shoes as long as they match the broken white dresses," Era said.

She said that she would also make black tuxedos with satin lapels, a bowtie and one-meter long tails, paired with black trousers, for the young men.

"I must make the debutantes look glamorous but not old. It's challenging," said Era, who has started making the dresses and tuxedos in August.

Diane W*lfer, the wife of the Austrian ambassador to Indonesia, said that the event was part of the embassy's cultural promotion. She said that Austria hoped to enhance its cultural and economic links with Indonesia with the event.

"The Vienna Ball is a classic tradition. It would be an honor to be able to feature daughters and sons in such event," she said.

Mitrovits said that as an Austrian he was excited to share the extravagant tradition with Indonesian people, who respect the value of tradition.

The classical music of the Johann Strauss Viennese Orchestra will accompany the dancers, including the famous Midnight Quadrilles, a complicated dance in which the couples will be placed facing each other in lines.

The ball will be held in Kempenski's grand ballroom, which will be transformed with crystal chandeliers, huge mirrors and gilded ornaments to resemble the thick classic ambience of the Sch*nbrunn Palace, a prominent historical building in Austria.

The surrounding will be decorated in the Heuriger style. The ball will last from around 6.00 p.m. to 3.00 a.m.

The hotel will provide strolling tickets for Rp 800,000 and seating tickets for Rp 2.5 million and Rp 2.2 million.

The Order of the Eagle of Georgia and the Seamless Tunic of Our Lord Jesus Christ is a family dynastic institute of the Royal House of Georgia, founded by Saint Queen Tamar (1184-1213) and was reconstituted in 1939 by the grandfather of the current Head of the Royal House, H.R.H. Irakly Bagrationi Mukran, as the main order of the Royal House.

The Order is registered as an institution of chivalry by the International commission for orders of chivalry. It is also listed in Guy Stair Sainty's book; World Orders of Knighthood and Merit (Publisher: Burke's Peerage & Gentry).

Op de website monarchen.nl van de kruiperige en onderdanige Maarten van der Meer, die om zich graag Maarten "Heuff" van der Meer noemt zonder dat hij hier recht op heeft, wordt tegenwoordig tegen betaling geadverteerd met "Russische Bruiden". Op de website werd door een lezer van Nobility News de volgende advertentie aangetroffen:

Maarten van der Meer haalt kennelijk zijn schouders op als hij wordt geconfronteerd met het feit dat wereldwijd er jaarlijks 600.000 tot 800.000 mannen, vrouwen en kinderen worden verhandeld. 80 procent daarvan is vrouw, 50 procent zijn kinderen. Het overgrote deel van hen komt terecht in de gedwongen prostitutie. Schrikbarende aantallen waar vaak internationale criminele netwerken achter zitten. Het is tegenwoordig de snelst groeiende criminele activiteit, waar helaas nog steeds heel makkelijk veel geld mee verdiend kan worden.

Wat hij vergeet te melden is dat voor de plaatsing van de brief door de redactie later een excuus is aangeboden. Hij was afkomstig van Peter Hofman Kolk, een zeer slecht bekend staande persoon, die als lid van het Koninklijk Nederlandsch Genootschap voor Geslacht- en Wapenkunde is geroyeerd wegens wangedrag. Een 'beetje dom' om uitgerekend deze man te citeren.

Family history
The Libro d'Oro lists the Paternò family as an historical family for more than a thousand years which traces its origins to Prince Robert of Embrun and to the Sovereign House of Barcelona and Provence which arrived in Sicily in 1060 as part of the entourage of King Roger, seizing the Castle and Lordship of Paternò therefrom it assumed its name. In 1161 Costantino Paternò Count of Butera married Matilde Avenela the daughter of the Count of Avellino and a niece of King Roger I of Hauteville. It is impossible to list all the members of the Family of Paternò who have risen to eminence over the centuries. They have achieved honours and titles as well as the highest ranks of ancient chivalry, such as the Military Belt and the Golden Spur, and the Paternò have been Viceroys, Vicars General of the Kingdom of Sicily, Presidents of the Kingdom, Cardinals, Ambassadors to Popes and Kings, brave knights, generous patrons of the arts, famous politicians. Already Counts of Butera and of Martana in the 12th Century, the Family of Paternò has established close ties of blood with the Norman, Swabian and Savoyard Royal Houses. Knights of the Order of Malta since the beginning of the 15th Century, they are recorded by Mugnos as one of those families of royal descent. The Paternò have been Peers of Sicily since their origin and so assumed control over the governorship of the city of Catania and over its House of Nobility as to be able to exclude anyone who did not meet with their approval. Over the course of the centuries the Family held more than 170 main fiefs and since the beginning of the 18th Century possessed five hereditary seats in the Sicilian Parliament. The abolition of feudalism meant the loss of these inherent rights but the Family has continued to be renowned in intellectual, diplomatic and political fields.[1]

Family pactAfter the death of the last Prince of Cassano the heads of the different branches of the Paternò family met in family council at Palermo and recognised that the family's royal rights were vested in Don Mario Paternò Castello Guttadauro d'Emmanuel B. of Don Giovanni Paternò Castello iure maritale Prince of Emmanuel (son of Don Mario Guiseppe IV Duke of Carcaci) and his wife Eleanor Guttadauro last of the house of the Princes of Emmanuel and herself a descendant of the Kings of Aragon.[3]

Historical Criticism
The Fount of honour (Latin: fons honorum) of the family is heavily chalenged by Guy Stair Sainty stating that as a junior member of a junior branch of the family don Roberto has no right to claim any prerogative pertaining to its chief, whether or not such prerogative actually exists.[4]. In 1973 Lt Col Robert Gayre published a booklet in which the states that "certain observations should be made which, in our opinion, destroy completely these historical claims. The Papal legitimation which is brought forward to allow the desired descent was, in itself, insufficient to transfer any title to the Crown of Aragon. Furthermoree, as Aragon dit not have the Salic law, the descnet of crown could pass through a female line. Consequently, even if the legitimation had put Don Pedro Sancho into the line of succession, that succession would have gone through a female line on the extinction of the male descent - and so to the house of Paternò would have been out of succession in any case.". (...) It is clear that no matter how distinguisched is the house Paternò, it cannot claim to be the heirs of the Kingdom of the Balearic Isles or of Aragon." (Lt Col R. Gayre of Gayre and Nigg, A Glimpse of the Chivalric and Nobiliary Underworld, Lochore Enterprises (Malta) Ltd. Valetta, Malta, pp. 27-28). In a recent study of Dr Hans Hoegen Dijkhof at the Univiversity of Amsterdam this opinions have been opposed.

Legal Judgements
The legal judgements regarding the Fount of honour and the power to grant nobility are part of the PhD-research at the University of Amsterdam by Dr Hans Hoegen Dijkhof. This section of the article is based on his PhD-thesis [5].

The Fount of honour and the power to grant nobility played a role in the various Paternò cases in Italy.[6] On 1 April 1952, the ‘Pretura Unificata di Bari’, evidently a court of first instance in criminal cases, had to decide a criminal case against a certain Umberto Z., a resident of Bari, who had publicly presented himself as Count of St. Ilarico. Z. was prosecuted for violating article 496 of the Italian Penal Code, as he was denounced by an anonimous person for having committed this crime.[7].

Retaining the Fons honorum
His decisive defense was inter alia that this title had been validly conferred upon him by the ‘Prince Emanuel Francesco Mario Paternò Castello di Caraci’. It appeared after a full investigation of all relevant documents by the Court, that this Prince belonged to one of the first families of Sicily, a family who are descendants of William I, the Conqueror, descendants of the Counts of Gascogne, the Kings of Navarre and Castil and that the Prince was a direct descendant of the Kings of Mallorca and the Baleares and was still Pretender to this throne. The Court found that on these grounds, he had retained his full rights of fons honorum, which meant according to the Court, that he had the power to nobilitate, to grant and confirm coats of arms and to award predicates, taken from places in which his ancestors in fact had exercised sovereign powers, not to mention his right to constitute, resuscitate, reform and exercise the ‘Grand Magistry’ of the chivalric Orders of the dynasty, which are passed from father to son as an insupprimable heredity of birth, which in the ascendants of the Prince had found in fact also a confirmation by Francesco II of Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies, in 1860. Z. was acquitted.[8]

Legitimate power to grant honours
Then it was the Prince’s own turn. He was denounced on 14 July 1958 and prosecuted, as a resident of Brunate, before and condemned on 29 May 1962 by the ‘Pretore of Monsummano Terme’, the competent judge in first instance, to 4 months and 15 days imprisonment for having allegedly conferred false titles to a number of persons (Article 81 of the Penal Code and article 8 of Law 3.3.51 N.178.) but he was acquitted of several connected alleged counts (Articles 81cpv 640, 56, 640 of the Penal Code) for lack of evidence. He appealed with the ‘Tribunale di Pistoia’ and on 5 June 1964, this court of appeals confirmed his acquittal in first instance and annulled his condemnation in first instance. Basically, the Court said that the conferment to and acceptance of foreign honours, the honours conferred being foreign, by Italian citizens, was legal, while only the public use of these honours by Italian citizens was subject to authorisation by the President of the Republic, to properly safeguard the merits reserved to and represented by the honours bestowed by the Italian State. The Court had also investigated the fons honorum of the Prince and had found that he was the legitimate possessor of this faculty, which according to the Court was an expression of the honorific power of his house, which had been conserved by family tradition and had not suffered ‘debellatio’, the forced surrender of power. He was therefore entitled to grant the honours given by him, because the Court deemed that he had the legitimate power to grant these honours.[9]

The quote from the website of the Corpo della Nobiltà Italiana Circolo Giovanile>, section ‘Alcune domanda sulla nobiltà’, dated 24 December 2004, may further elucidate this point.[10]

Conferring of noble titles
The Public Prosecutor did not institute cassation and it was therefore definitively established between the Italian State and the Prince that the Prince or his direct descendants, by using their fons honorum, can validly confer noble titles.[11] Accordng to Hoegen Dijkhof it is an entirely different matter whether those who have been awarded with these noble titles are or have to be recognised by a State which has a law on nobility, as belonging to the nobility of this State or as having a right to be taken up in the nobility of this State. This should be established for each State separately, depending on the domestic laws.[12]

The latest judgement of arbitral tribunal of 5 November 2009 No 709/09, declared enforceable in the territory of the Italian Republic by decree of the Ordinary Court of Ragusa,[13] that the Head of the Royal House of Paternò Castello of Valencia, Sardinia has the fountain of honor with all the prerogatives attached and connected to the quality of Royal Highness. The court also deceided that Noble titles may be granted with or without predicates, coats of arms, titles of honor and chivalric orders as the subject of international law for the purposes of the Act of March 3, 1951, n . 178. More specific, the verdict states the following (p. 110 ff):

"IV) - H.R.H. Prince Thorbjorn Francesco Giuseppe Nicola Roberto Paterno Castello of the Dukes of Carcaci,Prince of Emanuel in accordance with the provisions of-1 'art. 16 of the Rules of the Court of Arbitration of Ragusa for a 'finding of evidence of claim, was entitled to set up the Real Home of Valencia and Paterno Castello di Sardegna and legally took over as Head, with the deeds of the notary public act of Vincenzo Giacalone Alcamo of July 20, 2009, rep. No. 25,806, Coll. No. 4270, recorded July 24, 2009 in Trapani, mod. T, No. 5132;

Blauw bloed, de overrompelende debuutroman van Binnert de Beaufort, verhaalt van de vriendschap tussen Olivier van Aldenborch en Stefan von Schwenningen Schönau. Tot Oliviers ongenoegen wordt zijn leven bepaald door ongeschreven gedragswetten. Op school moet hij zich wapenen tegen de benepen moraal van zijn klasgenoten en leraren. Door zijn vriendschap met Stefan, een zelfverzekerde diplomatenzoon, denkt Olivier zich van zijn keurslijf te bevrijden.

In Blauw bloed blikt Olivier, halfhartig societyjournalist, terug op het verloop van zijn vriendschap met Stefan. Stefan heeft hem met het echte leven laten kennismaken, maar dat heeft voor Olivier inmiddels veel van zijn glans verloren. Hun gezamenlijk in Amerika doorgebrachte studietijd heeft Stefans vrijheidsdrang in een heel ander, dreigend licht gesteld, vooral na hun ontmoeting met Sylvie, een getraumatiseerd meisje uit Louisiana. Sylvie zal de ware aard van Stefan aan Olivier openbaren.

Binnert de Beaufort (Arnhem, 1970) groeide op in Den Haag. Hij studeerde oude geschiedenis in Amsterdam en is tegenwoordig werkzaam als journalist.

Recensie
Romandebuut van de Quote-journalist (1970). Het thema van deze autobiografisch getinte roman is zeker origineel: hoe is het om als jongeman in deze tijd van adel te zijn? Danslessen te moeten volgen en braaf te moeten zijn om de naam van de familie niet te grabbel te gooien? De uitwerking van het thema in twee verhaallijnen - een in het verleden als de hoofdpersoon nog jong is en de tweede verhaallijn speelt nu, als hij dertiger is, en werkt bij een blad dat erg op Quote lijkt - is aardig. Langzamerhand grijpen de twee verhaallijnen meer in elkaar. Soms heeft het iets van een thriller: wat is er toch met Sylvie gebeurd? Hoe zal de rechtszaak tegen de hoofdpersoon aflopen? Anderzijds bevat het verhaal nog wel een aantal losse einden. Al met al toch onderhoudend. Vrij kleine druk.

Queen pays tribute to 'Last Tommy'

The Queen, the Prince of Wales and Prime Minister Gordon Brown have led tributes to the last surviving British soldier of the First World War, who has died at the age of 111.

Harry Patch, known as the Last Tommy, passed away peacefully just before 9am on Saturday at Fletcher House nursing home in Wells, Somerset.

He had become Britain's oldest man when another veteran of the war, Henry Allingham, died a week ago on July 18 aged 113.

The only remaining known British-born veteran of the First World War is now Claude Choules, 108, who served in the Royal Navy and now lives in Perth, Australia.

Mr Patch, a machine-gunner, served in the trenches as a private from June to September 1917 and fought in the battle of Passchendaele in which more than 70,000 British troops died. He was born on June 17, 1898 and grew up in Combe Down, near Bath.

The Queen said: "I was saddened to hear of the death of Harry Patch, the last British survivor or the First World War. We will never forget the bravery and enormous sacrifice of his generation, which will continue to serve as an example to us all."

Prince Charles said nothing could give him greater pride than to pay tribute to Mr Patch. He told the BBC: "The Great War is a chapter in our history we must never forget, so many sacrifices were made, so many young lives lost.

"Harry was involved in numerous bouts of heavy fighting on the front line but amazingly remained unscathed for a while. Tragically one night in September 1917 when in the morass in the Ypres Salient, a German shrapnel shell burst overhead badly wounding Harry and killing three of his closest friends.

"In spite of the comparatively short time that he served with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, Harry always cherished the extraordinary camaraderie that the appalling conditions engendered in the battalion and remained loyal to the end."

The Prime Minister said: "I know that the whole nation will unite to honour the memory, and to take pride in the generation that fought the Great War. The noblest of all the generations has left us, but they will never be forgotten. We say today with still greater force: 'We will remember them'."

Kruisvaarders voor mensen in nood

De zwarte mantel die zij op hun jaarlijkse ridderdag dragen, verwijst naar de man naar wie hun beweging is vernoemd: Johannes de Doper. Op de stof is een wit kruis met acht punten geweven, symbool van de zaligsprekingen. De leden van de Johanniter Orde in Nederland zien in Jezus’ woorden een belangrijke inspiratiebron bij hun inzet voor mensen in nood. „Wij willen troost, zorg en aandacht geven”, zegt een van hen in een nieuw, informatief boek over de orde.

Op hun jaarlijkse ridderdag in Zeist vormen de leden van de Johanniter Orde een opvallende verschijning. De ridders en dames, allemaal lid van de protestants-christelijke adel in Nederland, komen met veel ceremonieel vertoon bijeen in Slot Zeist en lopen vervolgens in optocht naar de kapel van de evangelische broederschap voor een speciale kerkdienst. Iedereen draagt bij die gelegenheid een zwarte mantel met daarop een wit, achtpuntig kruis.

Voor veel baronnen, baronessen, jonkheren en jonkvrouwen vormt het moment waarop jonge edelen tot de orde toetreden het hoogtepunt van de dag. Dat gebeurt op een bijzondere manier. Voorovergebogen op een knielbank krijgen de nieuwkomers drie slagen met een zwaard op de linkerschouder. Daarmee worden zij tot ridder of dame geïnstalleerd. „Een indrukwekkende plechtigheid”, zegt jhr. dr. P. A. C. Beelaerts van Blokland.

De Utrechtse oud-commissaris van de Koningin doet zijn uitspraak in het boek ”Honderd jaar Johanniter Orde in Nederland”, waarin de geschiedenis van de protestants-christelijke adelsvereniging goed gedocumenteerd uit de doeken wordt gedaan. Bij de viering van het eeuwfeest, zaterdag, kreeg koningin Beatrix het eerste exemplaar overhandigd uit handen van de coadjutor van de orde, jhr. mr. J. P. de Savornin Lohman.

Koninklijk Huis
De Johanniter Orde heeft nauwe banden met het Koninklijk Huis. Niemand minder dan prins Hendrik, echtgenoot van koningin Wilhelmina, gaf in 1909 de aanzet tot de vorming van een Nederlandse afdeling van een beweging die haar vleugels in Europa breed heeft uitgeslagen. Prins Bernhard heeft de orde vijftig jaar lang geleid. Zowel koningin Beatrix als prins Willem-Alexander is er lid van.

De Johanniter beweging zelf is vele eeuwen ouder. Zij ontstond in de tijd van de kruistochten, toen christenen, vaak onder aanmoediging van de paus, het Heilige Land wilden vrijwaren van vijandelijke invloeden. Slachtoffers van de bloedige oorlogen werden door de Johanniters opgevangen in ziekenhuizen in Jeruzalem. Overigens konden niet alleen de gewonde kruisridders, maar ook zieke pelgrims een beroep op de zorg van de lekenbroeders doen.

De Johanniters ervaren de link met de kruisvaarders niet als een smet op het blazoen. Het tegendeel blijkt het geval te zijn. „De strijd om de heilige plaatsen kunnen we begrijpen, maar niet goedkeuren”, zegt ds. C. van Dongen, predikant van de orde, in het jubileumboek. Maar de zorg die de Johanniters besteedden aan gewonden en zieken, is volgens hem „een van de weinige positieve gevolgen” van de kruistochten, „een wit randje aan een zwarte bladzijde in de historie.”

De Reformatie leidde tot een scheuring in de orde. De rooms-katholieken gingen verder als de Maltezer Orde, de protestanten als de Johanniter Orde. Beide bewegingen bloedden in Nederland in de eeuwen daarna zo goed als dood, totdat prins Hendrik in 1909 tot heroprichting van de Johanniter Orde kwam. Twee jaar later volgden de rooms-katholieken. Beide adellijke organisaties werken inmiddels nauw samen.

Geheimzinnigheid
Volgens ds. Van Dongen spelen de zaligsprekingen een belangrijke rol bij de hulpverlening door de ridders en dames. Naar zijn overtuiging moedigen zij aan tot hulp, troost, bescheidenheid, rechtvaardigheid, empathie, integriteit, vrede en geloof. „Wij zijn al eeuwen geen gewapende kruisridders meer, maar we zien onszelf wel als kruisvaarders voor de hulpbehoevende mensen”, aldus voorzitter jhr. mr. J. P. de Savornin Lohman.

Samen met een leger van enkele duizenden vrijwilligers zetten de 600 Johanniter edelen zich in voor hulp aan daklozen, armoedebestrijding, recreatieve activiteiten voor mensen met een lichamelijke of verstandelijke beperking. De orde is actief betrokken bij tal van projecten in ziekenhuizen, zorg instellingen en hospices. Ze geven een handreiking die, aldus ds. Van Dongen, „vooral niet paternalistisch mag overkomen.”

Volgens De Savornin Lohman klopt de indruk dat de Johanniters hun werk vrij geruisloos en onzichtbaar doen en dat zij voor het bredere publiek alleen in beeld komen op de jaarlijkse ridderdag in Zeist. „De geheimzinnigheid die nog vaak rond de orde hangt, willen we afschudden”, zegt hij in het boek. „We hebben er geen behoefte aan onszelf te manifesteren, maar publiciteit over projecten is prima.”

De mantel van prins Bernhard
Prins Bernhard gaf op de kop af vijftig jaar, van 1954 tot aan zijn dood in 2004, leiding aan de Johanniter Orde. Ooit hielp hij tijdens een ridderdag in Den Haag erelid jhr. V. H. de Villeneuve uit de brand.

Toen De Villeneuve op de plaats van bestemming kwam, ontdekte hij dat hij zijn zwarte mantel met kruis was vergeten. Die had hij nodig voor het zogenaamde cortège, een processie van Johanniter ridders.

„Ik heb mijn dochter gebeld en gevraagd stante pede naar Den Haag te komen. Toen we ons gingen opstellen had ik nog steeds geen mantel. De prins keek me vragend aan. „Mijn mantel is onderweg naar hier, met mijn dochter.” „Geen probleem”, zei hij, „neem mijn mantel maar. Als u zonder mantel binnenkomt, kijkt iedereen op. Als ik zonder mantel binnenkom, zal nooit iemand er iets over zeggen. U krijgt mijn mantel.” Hij stond erop. Zo was hij.”

Cornelis Kraijenhoff 1758-1840 - Een loopbaan onder vijf regeervormen

Cornelis baron Kraijenhoff was zeer veel: medicus, natuurkundige, waterstaatkundige, topograaf, militair ingenieur, minister van Oorlog. Hij speelde een rol in alle politieke en militaire keerpunten van zijn tijd: 1787, 1795, 1799, 1809/1810, 1813.

Minstens even belangrijk waren zijn grote projecten, die het land als het ware van een ruggengraat hebben voorzien: de driehoeksmeting voor de eerste exacte kaart van het land; zijn waterstaatkundige opmetingen die leidden tot het landelijk maken van het Amsterdams peil; de (re)organisatie van de waterlinies in Holland en Utrecht.

In een radicale aanpak van het rivierenprobleem was hij zijn tijd te ver vooruit. Zijn ongehoorde vestingenproject in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden ten slotte, gerealiseerd in een driemanschap met Willem I en Wellington, leidde tot zijn val. Het raakte in de vergetelheid - zoals ook Kraijenhoff. Toch mag hij, met zijn activiteiten vooral in de Bataafs-Franse tijd, te boek worden gesteld als een van de erflaters van het moderne Nederland.

Wilfried Uitterhoeve (1944) heeft gepubliceerd op tal van historische terreinen, van de reizen van Columbus tot de geschiedenis van Nijmegen en omgeving. Samen met Eric M. Moormann schreef hij de naslagwerken die in 2007 zijn bijeengebracht in het lexicon Van Alexander tot Zeus.

Grootse openingstentoonstelling Hermitage Amsterdam, vanaf 20 juni 2009

De Hermitage Amsterdam opent met de tentoonstelling Aan het Russische hof. Paleis en protocol in de 19de eeuw, die met ruim 1800 objecten van het moedermuseum in St.-Petersburg een van de grootste tentoonstellingen ooit in Nederland belooft te worden. De tentoonstelling, te zien van 20 juni 2009 tot en met 31 januari 2010, speelt zich af in een eeuw van zes tsaren. De eerste is de minder bekende Paul I, de zoon van Catharina de Grote, de laatste Nicolaas II, de tragische laatste tsaar van Rusland.

Het was een tijd met een zeer rijk hofleven, en dat staat in de tentoonstelling centraal: het uitvoerige hofprotocol, de feestelijke bals, de fantastische japonnen. Onder het reusachtige aantal objecten bevinden zich honderden baljurken, schilderijen van Winterhalter en Repin, unieke meubels (waaronder de beroemde Romanov-troon), indrukwekkende juwelen (van onder anderen Fabergé), kostbare en omvangrijke serviezen en de vleugel van de laatste tsarina. Eén tentoonstellingsvleugel van de Hermitage Amsterdam is gewijd aan het officiële protocol met zijn publieke demonstratie van macht en weelde, de andere vertelt over de grandioze diners, feesten en themabals die de tsaren gaven in de Hermitage.

De tentoonstelling wordt spectaculair ingericht door Merkx+Girod Architecten, bekend van onder meer de Meesterwerkenpresentatie van het Rijksmuseum Amsterdam en de Marokko-tentoonstelling in De Nieuwe Kerk. Uitgangspunt van het ontwerp zijn de twee beroemdste staatsievertrekken van het Winterpaleis: de Nicolaaszaal en de Sint-Joriszaal. De decoraties van die zalen komen in geabstraheerde vorm terug in de twee grote tentoonstellingszalen van de Hermitage Amsterdam.

De publieksbegeleiding in de tentoonstelling is zeer gevarieerd. Naast de traditionele beteksting en de audiotour zijn er verschillende interactieve computerprogramma’s die verdieping aanbieden bij de basisinformatie. Opvallende toevoeging is de projectie van beelden uit de film Russian Ark van de Russische regisseur Alexander Sokurov, die helemaal in de Russische Hermitage speelt. Ze zullen samen met muziek en ronddraaiende vitrines bijdragen aan de indruk dat zich in de Hermitage Amsterdam een negentiende-eeuws bal afspeelt.

Koningin bij viering 100 jaar Johanniter Orde

Hare Majesteit de Koningin is zaterdagochtend 20 juni in de Grote Kerk van Naarden aanwezig bij de viering van het 100-jarig bestaan van de Johanniter Orde in Nederland. De protestants adellijke Johanniter Orde werd in 1909 door Prins Hendrik opgericht.

De orde vindt haar oorsprong de orde van Sint Jan, in de tijd van de kruistochten. Deze was opgericht om hulp aan zieken en gewonden te bieden. Deze doelstelling geldt nu nog steeds in de Johanniter Orde.

Binnen de Johanniter Hulpverlening zijn ruim 3.000 vrijwilligers actief in meer dan dertig (zorg-)instellingen in Nederland. Zij organiseren onder andere vakantieweken voor mensen met een handicap en hebben het initiatief genomen tot instellingen als Kruispost Amsterdam (eerste hulp aan onverzekerden) en Sint Jans Hospice de Casembroot Middelburg (verzorging terminale patiënten).

Jonge Johanniters bezoeken wekelijks gedetineerden in de jeugdgevangenis Teylingereind in Sassenheim.

Prins Bernhard was Landcommandeur van de Orde, de Koningin is Erecommandeur en de Prins van Oranje is als Rechtsridder aan de Johanniter Orde verbonden. De Koningin neemt het jubileumboek 'Honderd jaar Johanniter Orde in Nederland 1909 – 2009' in ontvangst.

Le comte de Paris décoré de la Légion par le Président Nicolas Sarkozy

Déjà décoré en 1959 de la Croix de la Valeur Militaire, Monseigneur le comte de Paris a reçu ce 18 mai la Légion d'honneur à titre militaire pour ses faits de guerre et son implication en tant qu'officier de la légion étrangère dans différents conflits. Reçu en fin d'après midi à l'Élysée, Monseigneur a été décoré par le Président Nicolas Sarkozy au cours d'une cérémonie de 45 minutes durant lesquelles le président a prononcé un discours s'adressant à monseigneur le comte de Paris ...où il a rendu hommage aux 40 rois qui ont fait la France, puis il a personnellement offert un bouquet de fleurs à la comtesse de Paris.

Il n'est pas rare qu'une telle distinction soit remise, à titre militaire, à un membre de la famille de France. Servir, et dans le cas présent servir dans l'Armée française, est en effet une tradition bien ancrée dans cette famille. Le dévouement et l'esprit de sacrifice militaire y ont souvent été poussés jusqu'à l'héroisme, et parfois même jusqu'au sacrifice suprême, comme ce fut le cas pour le Prince François, l'un des onze enfants du précédent Comte de Paris, et donc frère de l'actuel Comte de Paris, mort pour la France en Algérie en 1960, près du village de Michelet.....

Parmi les proches qui étaient présents : la comtesse de Paris, le duc de Vendôme, le duc d'Angoulême, les ducs de Chartres, la princesse Chantal et le baron François-Xavier de Sambucy de Sorgue, les ducs d'Uzès, les comtes de Bourbon-Busset, les comtes de La Panouse, le prince Fayçal de Tunisie, les princes Constantin Mourousy, les marquis d'Amat, M. Stephane Bern et les représentants de la Fondation Saint-Louis.

Already pronounced husband and wife in a March 19th ceremony at the town hall in Paris' 7th arrondissement, the union between Prince Jean d'Orleans, Duke of Vendome and Philomena de Toros y Steinhart was blessed during a religious ceremony held on May 2, 2009.

Well-wishers standing outside Senlis Cathedral in Senlis, France witnessed a steady stream of royals, including Prince Guillaume and Sybille of Luxembourg, the Duke and Duchess of Wurtemberg, The Infanta Pilar of Spain and Prine Philippe and Mathilde of Belgium, stroll by before the bride stepped upon the blue aisle runner which would lead her to the altar.

Wearing an ornate Christian Lacroix creation accented with gold embroidery, a dainty blue bow sewn onto the garment harmonized with the baby blue outfits worn by the tiny attendants, who cared for the gown's train and the lace-edged veil which clung to the turquoise tiara atop the bride's blonde tresses.

Following the exchange of vows, the newlyweds and their guests gathered at Chateau de Chantilly for the reception.

I'm glad to see the WSJ paying attention to non-reigning royalty (though the reader comments--open only to subscribers--are uniformly disgusting), and that HRH persists in believing in the future of the French monarchy, no matter how unlikely its restoration seems at present. But there are a few misleading statements in the article.

(1) The [Spanish] Bourbons (the French Bourbon senior line became extinct in 1883) and the Orléans are not two separate families or dynasties. They are different branches of the same family, the Capetians, who ruled France from 987 to the Revolution and then again until 1848, and remain on the thrones of Spain and Luxembourg. Both the Duke of Anjou ("Louis XX") and the Duke of Vendôme are descended in the male line from King Louis XIII (1601-1643), the former from his elder son Louis XIV (1638-1715) and the latter from his younger son Philippe Duc d'Orléans (1640-1701). While it is not incorrect to state that "[t]he Orléans are related to Louis Philippe I, who ruled France between 1830 and 1848 and was related to Louis XIV's younger brother," why not specify that the Orléans are descended from Louis Philippe I (1773-1850), who was descended from Louis XIV's younger brother? "Related" makes it sound like some vague connection less direct than it actually is. As direct male-line descendants of Henri IV (the first "Bourbon" King of France) and his son Louis XIII, in a sense the Orléans family are "Bourbons" too.

(2) Luis Alfonso de Bourbon, Duke of Anjou (b. 1974), is not a "distant cousin" of the King of Spain. His father was Juan Carlos's first cousin, making them first cousins once removed. That is not a "distant" relationship!

(3) The idea that a Spaniard cannot be King of France is not really an "old tradition," but rather an odd way of summarizing the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, which stipulated that the crowns of Spain and France could never be united. The main issue, however, is not that stipulation (since Luis Alfonso is not in line to the Spanish throne), but rather the fact that Louis XIV's grandson Philippe Duc d'Anjou (from whom the Spanish and Italian Bourbons, including Luis Alfonso, all descend) renounced for himself and his descendants any claim to the French throne in order to be recognized as King Felipe V of Spain (1683-1746); the validity of that renunciation is the key dispute between supporters of "Louis XX" and supporters of "Henri VII" (Jean's father).

That said, kudos to Prince Jean for his determination to remain above "Left" and "Right" and "sow ideas" for Restoration. Vive le Roi---whoever "le Roi" is! I would gladly acclaim either Louis XX or Henri VII rather than the French Republic!

De Vereniging Buitenlandse Adel in Nederland (VBAN) maakt bekend dat haar internationale netwerk voor professionals - European Nobility Network (ENN) - inmiddels meer dan 500 leden telt.

Het ENN is in december 2006 opgericht om in internationaal verband de positie van de adel te ondersteunen. Aan het ENN werken verschillende leden mee van Europese vorstenhuizen en adellijke families. Bekende namen binnen het ENN zijn onder meer von Schwerin, von Sachsen-Altenburg, zu Mecklenburg, de Noronha e Andrade, von Hessen, von der Schulenburg, zu Castell-Rüdenhausen, Van Wassenaer en Bas Backer.

Interview with the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, in the newspaper "Russian News"

Your Imperial Highness, the process that culminated in the legal rehabilitation of Emperor Nicholas II and his family went on for many years. The rulings of all the lower courts had uniformly been negative—that is, the murder of the royal family was deemed to be a criminal act…nothing more or less…. Was it something of a surprise, then, to learn about the ruling of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation?

I always believed that the rule of law and justice would triumph. And that this matter would be resolved in Russia. But this ruling of the Presidium of the Supreme Court was, to a certain extent, rather unexpected. I had appealed the previous, unlawful rulings of lower courts and moved to have the matter reviewed again. But I had not foreseen that on 1 October 2008, my relatives would be finally rehabilitated. But, thank God, I am delighted no less by this unexpected turn of events.

What do you make of the ruling of the Supreme Court: as merely a validation of the historical record, or as the reestablishment of historic justice, the rebirth of spiritual principles in Russian government?

I see it as both of these things. The state cannot be strong without the observance of the rule of law. Society is ruined if a spiritual and moral grounding is void in it. We perhaps do not yet fully realize it, but surely a very important event has taken place: the modern Russian state—from the moment it recognized the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers as victims of political repression, in full accordance with the laws—no longer bears the bloody responsibility for the regicides of 17 July 1918! Therefore, I affirm that this is not a personal victory for me, but a general victory for my country.

Does the ruling of the Supreme Court open the door to the restitution of lost properties for the House of Romanoff and to the descendants of Russian émigrés of the first wave?

I have, like my father and grandfather, always been against the restitution of property in principle since it would entail a threat to the civil order in Russia. Moreover, I have never linked property or monetary issues with the question of the rehabilitation of the royal family. If I had wanted to receive property or money, I would have acted through any number of international legal bodies without any reference at all to the rehabilitation. But we have not sought anything and we do not require anything for ourselves. Since 1991, we have actively participated in Russian life, we have been in Russia many times, and have never once voiced any such pretentions. When the government implements what has already been recognized in the overwhelming majority of the country, that the Russian Imperial House is a historical institution, and allows its return to Russia on these terms, then the government itself will determine how and in what form it will provide maintenance for us and what aid it will provide for the expansion of our social and cultural activities.

It is possible that someone looking at the prospects of your return to Russia would see it as an attempt to restore the monarchy, and therefore fear it.

The reestablishment of the monarchy is one thing, and the legal recognition of the status of the Imperial dynasty is altogether something else. Not in any of the countries of the world that have allowed the return of their Imperial or Royal dynasties has there been any resulting discord. Just look at Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Hungary, Albania…. Everywhere that the former dynasties have returned, the governments have in one way or another determined its formal legal relationship to it. And nowhere has this shaken the existing constitutional order, but has only made possible a further establishing of the authority of the state. As far as the reestablishment of the monarchy is concerned, only the people can make that decision. We hold to the monarchist idea and believe that legitimate monarchy is most suited to Russia. But we would never agree to a restoration except by the expressed will of the people. In any case, we want to serve our country, and seek no personal advantages.

Interest in the former Russian Empire cannot help but touch on the very relevant question today of the international relationship between the currently independent states that once formed part of the Empire. I would like to know what your opinion is about recent events in the Caucasus, about how it could be that Georgia, which once, of its own free will, became part of Russia, should today be a military adversary? What is your take on the claims of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia?

You have touched on an extremely tragic and sensitive topic. The present enmity between Russia and Georgia goes against the very interests of Russians and Georgians. It is the result of the irresponsible actions of political leaders who are doing nothing but fulfilling the wishes of foreign powers and who are transforming their territory into a firing range for foreign weaponry, aimed at the citizens of these regions.

The Imperial House has never participated in the dismemberment of the country or in fratricidal civil war. We have always felt ourselves to be in our homeland, whether we be in the Russian Federation, of which we are a citizen, or in any of the other countries that formed after December 1991 in territories of the former Russian Empire. I believe that sooner or later, unity of all the peoples of the Russian Empire will be reestablished. This does not mean the reestablishment of the empire in the same form it had before 1917, and, of course, this does not mean the reestablishment of the USSR. But at an appropriate point in the future, one might find a kind of Commonwealth which would correspond to the present realities and, at the same time, lean on traditions, on the centuries-long experience of our ancestors, who together created a great world power. As for the recognition by Russia of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, this is a convoluted question. Of course, Russia simply cannot abandon to their own fates the peoples of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, the Pridnestr, and the countless other peoples of all nationalities in other countries, who, when the USSR fell, found themselves in these territories and were suddenly and unexpectedly citizens of a foreign country. All of these people trust Russia and expect protection from her. I firmly am convinced that this is one of the important historical missions of the Russian Federation, and, at the same time, I very much hope that Russia’s recognition of the independence of these lands you ask about will not deepen the conflict, and will not be used in the future as a precedent by our geopolitical rivals against the territorial integrity of Russia itself. In such matters it is necessary to show both a strong will and extreme sensitivity, and in no way to permit any double standards in relation to our own interests or to those of the people who expect from Russia help and protection.

Albrecht der Bär: Glanzvolle Ordensverleihung in Amsterdam im November 2008

Auf Initiative von Herrn R.A.U. Juchter van Bergen Quast konnte Seine Hoheit Eduard Prinz von Anhalt eine weitere wichtige Persönlichkeit im Askanischen Hausorden Albrecht der Bär begrüßen. Dr. Hans Hoegen Dijkhof, Rechtsanwalt und Inhaber einer großen und international erfolgreichen Anwaltskanzlei in Amsterdam, wurde in einer privaten und sehr feierlichen Zeremonie im Hotel Hilton in Amsterdam in der Ordensklasse Commander in die Gemeinschaft der askanischen Bären aufgenommen.

Dr. Hoegen Dijkhof hatte zu einem Galadinner geladen und viele Freunde und Weggefährten aus Politik und Wirtschaft aus den Niederlanden folgten der Einladung zu diesem Ereignis. S.H. Prinz von Anhalt, begleitet von seiner Ehefrau I.H. Corinna Prinzessin von Anhalt, überreichte Dr. Hoegen Dijkhof die Ordensurkunde sowie Miniaturen und die rot-grün-rote Rosette. Außerdem erhielt Dr. Hoegen die Ordensregeln und Statuten sowie ein Buch zur Geschichte der Familie von Anhalt-Askanien.

Dr. Hoegen Dijkhof erhielt den Orden, für seine umfassenden juristischen Recherchen, womit er die Grundlagen für die Weiterentwicklung des Ordens im Sinne seiner zeitgemäßen, heute gültigen Grundsätze und Werte schuf.

S.H. als Großmeister des Haus-Ordens Albrecht der Bär, freut sich über den neuen, ganz im Sinne des Ordens aktiven Bruder.

Der Namensgeber des Ordens ist Albrecht der Bär (1100 - 1170) erster askanischer Markgraf von Brandenburg, Graf von Anhalt und Ballenstedt. Die ersten bekannten Verleihungen von Orden in den askanischen Häusern gehen zurück bis ins Jahr 1382.

Albrecht der Bär, Sohn von Otto dem Reichen ist der Ur-Urenkel des Stammvaters der Askanier Graf Esiko von Ballenstedt (gest.ca.1059). Albrecht war eines der berühmtesten historischen Persönlichkeiten des deutschen Mittelalters. Neben seinen Eroberungen östlich von Saale und Elbe war er Vertrauter und Diplomat für mehrere deutsche Könige und Kaiser (z.B. Kaiser Barbarossa). Durch seine Eroberungen und angeheiratete Rechte brachten es seine Söhne zu den mächtigsten Fürsten und Kurfürsten im Heiligen Römischen Reich Deutscher Nation. Sohn Otto wurde Markgraf von Brandenburg, dessen Söhne übrigens Berlin gründeten und der Stadt den Bären ihres Großvaters verliehen. Der jüngere Sohn Bernhard wurde Herzog von Sachsen und erbte die Grafschaft Anhalt. Von Bernhards Söhnen wurde Heinrich I. Fürst von Anhalt und Stammvater aller heute lebenden echten Mitglieder des Hauses Anhalt.

Der heutige Großmeister des Ordens, S.H. Prinz Eduard von Anhalt wurde genau wie sein Urahn in Ballenstedt geboren. Aus den bekannten geschichtlichen Gründen wurden der Prinz und seine Familie lange Zeit von ihrer Heimat ferngehalten, und genießen es nun um so mehr, das Land seiner Vorväter kennen zulernen und neu zu erfahren. Auch der Orden soll nun wieder mit Leben gefüllt werden. In diesem Sinne verleiht das Haus Anhalt-Askanien den Orden Albrecht der Bär wieder an Persönlichkeiten, die sich in besonderer Weise um das Haus Anhalt-Askanien verdient machen.

Onderzoek naar bemoeienis rijksoverheid in privéleven de Roy van Zuydewijn

De Nationale ombudsman, Alex Brenninkmeijer, start een onderzoek naar mogelijke bemoeienis van de rijksoverheid met het privéleven van de Roy van Zuydewijn, waardoor hij nadeel zou hebben ondervonden. Aanleiding voor dit onderzoek is een klacht die de Roy van Zuydewijn hierover via zijn advocaat indiende bij de ombudsman.

De Roy van Zuydewijn noemt in zijn klacht twee voorbeelden van bemoeienis door de rijksoverheid in zijn privéleven. Ten tijde van zijn betrokkenheid bij het Bouwfonds, probeerde de directeur van het Kabinet der Koningin informatie bij het Bouwfonds los te krijgen over hem. Vervolgens deed de rijksrecherche een onderzoek naar de Roy van Zuydewijn bij dit fonds. Hierdoor zou het Bouwfonds zijn gestopt met het geven van opdrachten aan het bedrijf van de Roy van Zuydewijn. Ook werd hij door een reclamebureau gevraagd mee te werken aan een reclamespot voor een overheidscampagne tegen alcohol in het verkeer (de BOB-campagne). De Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst zou het reclamebureau hebben gezegd hier niet van gediend te zijn.

Het onderzoek van de ombudsman is erop gericht om vast te stellen of er inderdaad sprake is van inmenging in het privéleven van de Roy van Zuydewijn en in hoeverre dit negatieve invloed op zijn privéleven heeft gehad.

De Nationale ombudsman licht zijn onderzoek toe in een uitzending van Eén Vandaag op woensdag 1 april, 18:15, Nederland 1.

Queen is not amused by Brown's Royal succession plan

The Queen sounded a note of caution yesterday over Gordon Brown's revolutionary plans to bring equality to the monarchy.

Buckingham Palace said no changes to the laws and traditions of the Crown could be made until every country where the Queen is head of state had given its approval.

That means years of delay while 15 legislatures – including those of Australia, New Zealand and Canada – quibble over the Prime Minister's proposals.

Behind the Queen's insistence on cast-iron support from the Commonwealth is thought to lie her deep concern about the role of Christianity in Britain and the unforeseen impact of any reforms.

Mr Brown aims to remove the 308- year-old legal barriers that prevent a Roman Catholic or anyone married to a Catholic from becoming King.

He also intends to sweep away primogeniture, the ancient principle that says a man must always take precedence over a woman in line to the throne.

The surprise announcement that Downing Street and the Palace were in talks over reforms was made by Mr Brown's aides during a visit to Brasilia on Thursday.

Yesterday the Prime Minister accepted that Commonwealth countries must have a say, but added: 'I think in the 21st century people do expect discrimination to be removed and they do expect us to be looking at these issues.'

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace, however, said: 'This entire issue for us depends on obtaining agreement from each of the 15 realms of which the Queen is head of state. If an agreement were to be reached, then we would assess the situation. But not until then.'

It was underlined yesterday that the Queen is deeply committed to her overseas dominions and wants to be seen as taking her lead from them, not from the British Government.

And while Buckingham Palace was neutral over Mr Brown's reforms and the equality agenda that informs them, the Queen is known to be concerned over their impact on Christian belief and practice in Britain.

She is a serious Anglican and is aware of the possibility that Christianity may be sidelined if reforms to the monarchy culminate in the severance of the historic constitutional links between the Church of England and the state.

Mr Brown's reforms would mean the repeal of the Act of Settlement, the 1701 law designed to prevent the return of the Catholic Stuarts.

The abolition of primogeniture would open up the succession to women – for example Princess Anne would become fourth in line after Charles, William and Harry, and would overtake her brothers, Princes Andrew and Edward.

In the Commons, few MPs attended a debate on Liberal Democrat Dr Evan Harris's private members Bill calling for the same reforms.

It was effectively scuppered as Justice Secretary Jack Straw said Dr Harris's Bill was 'not the appropriate vehicle' for reform.

Tories meanwhile accused the Government of trying to divert attention from economic troubles.

Former minister Nicholas Soames said: 'This is an extraordinary thing to be talking about when the G20 summit is starting next week. It is a very, very odd time to raise it.'

ANALYSIS: Changing the act of succession would put a question mark over the monarchy

The Act of Settlement has long been a target of the political Left, who believe the 308-year-old pillar of the constitution is an offence against human rights.

Primogeniture, the automatic precedence of men over women in line for the throne which goes back as long as history has been written, is even more offensive to the diversity and equality lobby.

Campaigning against what the Left see as the twin evils of the Act and primogeniture began seriously at the turn of the Millennium, when the Guardian newspaper led the cause.

The Human Rights Act, which went into effect in 2000, gave a powerful boost to the idea.

Unhappiness has recently been shared by senior members of the Government. Justice Secretary Jack Straw launched a review of the Act of Settlement at the end of last year, calling it 'antiquated' and saying it discriminated against non-Protestants.

Leading Roman Catholics find the law irritating, although there has been no obvious sign of discontent among the millions of ordinary Catholics.

But the trouble with pulling down pillars of the constitution is that you never know what may fall with them.

Tinkering with either the 18th century law or the principle of primogeniture would put a question mark over the future of the monarchy, at a time when its popularity has been rocky.

The Act of Settlement was a law to ensure that the Roman Catholic Stuart dynasty, chased off the throne in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, could not return.

It barred any Catholic monarch or any monarch from marrying a Catholic, and paved the way for the arrival in 1714 of the Hanoverian dynasty with George I, the monarch from whom the present Queen is descended.

Repeal of the Act might even call into question the right of the Queen to be monarch.

The remnants of the Stuart dynasty now living in southern Germany might feel they had a better claim to the throne.

Removal of the Act of Settlement would threaten the position of the Church of England, England's state religion since 1534, when Henry VIII broke with Rome.

This would not worry some Church leaders. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams said last year that disestablishment was 'by no means the end of the world'.

It would, however, be a further blow to Christianity and leave a major constitutional problem.

The role of the CofE is knotted deeply together with that of Parliament and the monarchy in centuries of constitutional law and practice.

The Church crowns the monarch and the monarch is Supreme Governor of the Church. Neither role could continue were the Church to be disestablished.

An end to primogeniture would be seen as a blow to the hereditary principle, already eroded by the removal of hereditary peers from the House of Lords.

King of Spain bestowed Spanish knighthood on Lt. Governor Owen

OLYMPIA – More than 15 years working with the Spanish government on projects from arts to trains and even recognition of a historical fort in a far corner of Washington state has earned Lt. Gov. Brad Owen and a senior aide the highest honor the King of Spain can bestow on a non-citizen: Spanish knighthood.

The lieutenant governor will formally receive the title at an 11:30 a.m. ceremony and reception on April 2 2008 in Senate chambers in the Capitol. One of Owen’s longtime advisors on international relations, Antonio Sanchez, also will receive the decoration.

“I am extremely honored to receive this prestigious title, but more importantly it is a tribute to the great relationship we have been able to maintain with the Spanish government, a relationship that has been of significant benefit to our state and its citizens,” said Owen.

A number of ranking state dignitaries, including Governor Chris Gregoire, are expected to be in the ceremony. The list will include several other elected officials, both current and past.

Spanish King Juan Carlos I will not be at the ceremony but will be represented by Manuel Pradas Romani, the consul general of Spain in San Francisco and Luis Fernando Esteban, the honorary consul of Spain for Washington state.

The ceremony will also be broadcast live on TVW, the state’s public affairs network.

“Through the tireless efforts of these men, many thousands of citizens of Washington state and Spain have been given the opportunity to share their languages, history, culture and business opportunities,” said Esteban. “Together they have built a pathway of understanding and a peaceful and prosperous future.”

Examples of Spanish projects the two have helped foster cited by Consul Esteban include:

>> Securing the high speed Spanish Talgo train for Washington state in the early 1990s. As chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, then senator Owen helped evaluate the train’s feasibility for Amtrak, even riding it at his own expense when it was being demonstrated in the state in 1994. Sanchez visited the production site and helped lead the effort to ensure that the train sets would be assembled in the state. Washington was subsequently the first state in the nation to purchase the train, which began service in 1998 and continues to draw record ridership a decade later.

>> Bringing renowned Spanish art to the state, including the “Catalan Masters of the 20th Century” to the Tacoma Art Museum in 1997 and 1998 and the “Picasso Exhibition” in 1998. Esteban describes work by Owen and Sanchez as “pivotal” in bringing to the state prestigious collections of Spanish royal art and artifacts in recent years, including “Spain in the Age of Exploration 1492-1819” to the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) in 2004. That exhibit was visited by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain.

>> Coordinating a bilateral agreement with the Minister of Education of Spain and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to improve the skills and credentials of the 1,700 Spanish language teachers in Washington’s public schools. As a result more than 200 teachers were able to attend summer programs at the University of Salamanca west of Madrid. Owen attended the opening of the summer class in 2000 and gave a keynote address to more than 600 teachers from around the world.

>> A decade of collaborative work by Owen and Sanchez that culminated in the opening of the Cervantes Institute at the University of Washington. The institute, one of just four such programs in the U.S., promotes the Spanish language and culture from Spain and Latin America. Also developed and funded by Spain was the establishment of the Spanish library and Center for Spanish Studies at the UW.

>> The development of a memorial park in Neah Bay in collaboration with the Spanish consulate and the Makah Nation. Called Fort Núñez Gaona, the park commemorates the site of the first European settlement in Washington state 215 years ago and also serves as a veterans’ memorial. The park was completed in 2007 and will be dedicated later this spring.

>> Other work includes assistance with the development of a Microsoft research center in Spain and a $260,000 grant by University of Leon the University of Washington’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese to establish a teaching chair.

The title of knighthood has been received by only four other Washingtonians. They include Esteban; Mimi Gates, director of the Seattle Art Museum; former Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro and Chiyo Ishikawa, chief curator for European art at SAM.

Elected in 1996, Lt. Gov. Owen is currently the longest-serving lieutenant governor in office in the country and, at 32 years, the second-longest serving elected official in Washington state government. He served two terms in the House then four terms in the Senate prior to his current position as second-in-command of state government.

House of Lords

The Lords work in Parliament’s second chamber – the House of Lords – and complement and operate alongside the business of the House of Commons. It is one of the busiest second chambers in the world. The expertise of its Members and flexibility to scrutinise an issue in depth means the Lords makes a significant contribution to Parliament’s work. The UK public does not elect Members of the Lords.

Making laws
Making laws takes up the bulk of the House of Lords time, and Members are involved throughout the process of proposing, revising and amending legislation. Some Bills introduced by the Government begin in the Lords to spread the workload between the two Houses.

Judicial work
The House of Lords is the highest court in the land: the supreme court of appeal. A group of salaried, full-time judges known as Law Lords carries out this judicial work.

Checking the work of government
Lords check the work of the Government by questioning and debating decisions made by ministers and government departments.

Specialist committees
There are permanent committees investigating work relating to Europe, science and technology, economics and the constitution. Occasionally one-off committees are set up to deal with issues outside these areas.

Guide to the Honours

British honours are awarded on merit, for exceptional achievement or service.

Anybody can recommend a British national for an honour, which consist of life peerages, knighthoods, appointments to the Order of the British Empire and gallantry awards to servicemen and women and civilians.

Nominations, sent either by government ministers or by members of the public, are divided into subject areas and assessed by eight committees comprising both senior civil servants and independent experts.

Their assessments are passed to a selection committee that produces the list that is submitted to the Queen through the prime minister.

The Queen formally approves the list of recipients. The honours are published in the official Crown newspaper, the London Gazette.

Private nominations, made by individuals or by representatives of organisations to the Cabinet Office, traditionally make up about a quarter of all recommendations.

Honorary awards for foreign nationals are recommended by the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. Orders for chivalry are made after a personal decision by the Queen.

Life Peers

Life peerages are the only form of peerages regularly created by the Sovereign.

A life peer becomes a baron and sits in the House of Lords on conferment of peerage.

These are titles which they hold only during their lifetime and are not passed to their heirs.

Knights Bachelor

The honour of knighthood comes from the days of medieval chivalry, as does the method used to confer the knighthood: the accolade, or the touch of a sword by the Sovereign.

Although Knights Bachelor do not comprise an order of chivalry, knighthood is a dignity which has its origins in Britain in Saxon times. They are styled "Sir" (except for clergymen who do not receive the accolade) and their wives "Lady".

Women receiving the honour are styled "Dame" but do not receive the accolade.

The Order of the Bath

The Order of the Bath is an order of chivalry and was founded in 1725 for service of the highest calibre. The order has a civil and military division and is awarded in the following ranks: Knight Grand Cross (GCB), Knight Commander (KCB) and Companion (CB).

The Order takes its name from the symbolic bathing which in former times was often part of the preparation of a candidate for knighthood.

Order of St Michael and St George

This Order was founded by King George III in 1818 and is awarded to British subjects who have rendered extraordinary and important services abroad or in the Commonwealth. Ranks in the Order are Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GCMG), Knight or Dame Commander (KCMG or DCMG) and Companion (CMG).

Order of the Companions Honour

This is awarded for service of conspicuous national importance and is limited to 65 people. Recipients wear the initials CH after their name.

Orders of the British Empire

King George V in 1917 created these honours during World War 1 to reward services to the war effort by civilians at home and servicemen in support positions.

The orders are now awarded mainly to civilians and service personnel for public service or other distinctions and has a military and a civil division. Ranks in the Order are Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GBE), Knight or Dame Commander (KBE or DBE), Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE) and Member (MBE).

Royal Victorian Order

By 1896, prime ministers and governments had increased their influence over the distribution of awards and had gained almost total control of the system. Therefore, Queen Victoria instituted The Royal Victorian Order as a personal award for services performed on her behalf.

Today this honour is still awarded in recognition of services to the royal family. The ranks are Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GCVO), Knight or Dame Commander (KCVO or DCVO), Commander (CVO), Lieutenant (LVO) and Member (MVO).

Royal Victorian Medal

Associated with the Royal Victorian Order is the Royal Victorian Medal which has three grades: gold, silver and bronze. The circular medal is attached to the ribbon of the Order.

More than one grade may be held by the same person and the medal may be worn along with the insignia of the Order itself.

Royal Red Cross

Founded in 1883 by Queen Victoria, The award is confined to the Nursing Services. Those awarded the First Class are designated "Members" (RRC): those awarded the Second Class are designated "Associates" (ARRC).

It is said that the suggestion for the founding of this decoration was made to Queen Victoria by Miss Florence Nightingale.

Queen's Police Medal

This is awarded for distinguished service to the police force.

Queen's Fire Service Medal

This honour is given to firefighters who have displayed conspicuous devotion to duty.
